Why do some mages melee the boss of the raid/instance at the beginning of the battle?

Oh I see, thanks.
has anyone delved into changing battle text? What i mean is, I sometimes lag like a motherfucker and when I see 100tz Swipe what I really see is "Oh shit I'm lagging, 100tz Swi-RUN AWAY". If I could make it say, 100tz RUN UNDERNEATH HIM YOU TWAT then it would be easier to distinguish from 100tz RAN SO FAR AWAY
the ffxiv app thing has chat detection, mine does a telephone noise for voice of the dargon.. not sure if this would help you lagging lol?
probably not lol, I don't really have a problem with swing because it's really slow, but swipe always gives me trouble. ifritx was like playing in europe.
Is there a way to background check people on Lodestone with the achievements, boss killed x times, etc kind of thing? NA on Balmung is beyond bad, and I'm trying to get two more salts for relic. I learned a long time ago you can't ask for experienced people by shouting because the scrubs think they can slip in for an easy run. I've been relying on a JP linkshell, but the times don't always work well.
Not 100% sure what you mean, but you can search people through Lodestone and look up what they have leveled and their history. It won't show you how many times they've killed certain bosses, but seeing how many history entries they have is a good indicator over how much they've played the game. I'd say over 600~700 entries is probably a good place to start, but that's just my opinion, and you will of course still get bad players regardless of how much they've accomplished and, of course, people can still be good without having accomplished much.
I'm also wary of people who don't have any crafts/gatherers leveled. Only so much you can do with just battle classes, methinks.
itt: stan is wary of me![]()
But think of the animals!
And yeah, I know crafting/gathering can be boring, so I won't really hold it against anyone if they don't have it leveled, but since the original question was determining the quality of NA pickups through searches, that was my answer. Because most NA groups tend to do things only with their LS unlike JPs, NA pickups tend to be people without an event LS and can only do things through pickups (hence the reason why NA pickups tend to be so horrible). Thus, if they don't have any crafts leveled, there's a pretty good chance they can't support themselves with crafted gear and/or isn't willing to put the effort into it even when it makes them a better player in the longer run.
If the NA in question has an event LS and/or a crafter/gatherer they can call favors on, then it really doesn't matter.
Yep that answered my question, thanks. Also agree with your views...can't imagine not being self reliant.
So, I've read a few things, a few guides and skimmed around these threads, particularly this one but I can't seem to find anything about my particular inquiry. Probably cause it's so basic that it's not necessary for anyone to ask...
But my problem is, how the heck do you buy and sell things effectively? Currently, I run to the npc, and take screenshots of the items so I know the npc value and I have in my list since writing each one takes forever and then I go to the market wards and run to the exit and use the search option to try to search for what I have to see what the last few sales were and how many are in stock. Though this doesn't always work since I think you can only search something that is currently being sold in that city? I have no idea but that's what it seems like. I note the price on each one then talk to my retainer and set prices, granted only 10 at a time since that's all it'll let you do and I've only got one retainer atm.
So... Is it really this much of a pain in the arse to sell stuff or am I missing something? Just takes me a ridiculously long time to empty my inventory on things I'm not sure if I can NPC or not.
npc prices on this site have been accurate on everything I've checked lately.. I use the little stickynote app on win7 to write down prices to put in my retainer bazaars lol any way you do it, its a pain in the ass

Ah, thanks, that does save me one step. Though I was really hoping I was missing more ^^;
Mooglebox has all the NPC prices as well. I'm not sure why NPC prices play a role in things though. I only really follow these few rules when I sell stuff.
1) Make sure your retainer is in Ul'dah. Few people check elsewhere.
2) Price check your items before you put them up for sale to figure out your price.
3) Check back every (real life) day or so and if things aren't selling as fast as you'd like, re-check the price and adjust accordingly.
4) If I'm not going to make >10k from selling the item(s), it's not worth selling.
I'll admit, it's not the most usable system in the world, but it seems like you're overcomplicating it.
Yeah, luckily I found out about Ul'dah being the center of the universe fairly early, though every part is generally full so I have to rent out a stand just to get a retainer in there. I'm rather early on in the game, so I don't want to npc something for 500 gil if it's worth 5k.
Is there an easier way to figure out selling profit vs npc price without checking the NPC price first(via website even) or do you literally check the item, if the value is less than 10k you npc it? And is there a way to know what the price of something is without there being any up to search for? Do you have to put it up yourself, then search it just to see what the last 20 transactions are? Cause that makes my eye twitch...
If an item has been posted but there are none currently listed you can find it if you navigate the menus manually.
But if none of an item has been posted since the last maintenance it won't show up at all.
