I might have went overboard with a 12 gauge shotgun but habit shooting with a .22 does nothing to curb reflex flinching because, quite frankly, you don't need to with a .22. You want people to flinch and to move their gun around to get comfortable with it so they can gradually move to respecting the gun. A .40 and a .22 shoot very differently, have very different recoil and sound, and weigh different. Get someone used to a .22, then put a .40 in their hand and when they hit the trigger, what happens? They flinch and move the gun around till they get used to it because it will sound different and feel different than what they're used to shooting. So what does it really matter if they use a .22 or a .40 starting? Maybe a 9mm would be better. I would start with a Baretta since it has more moving parts and is a more complicated gun than a Glock. That way you can get used to it and assembly should put you on the right track to working any gun.
