GameStop Opens Exclusive Wii U Wait List to PowerUp Rewards™ Members

GRAPEVINE, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GameStop (NYSE: GME), the world’s largest multichannel retailer of video games, announced today that it has created a Nintendo Wii U wait list exclusively for members of its PowerUp Rewards loyalty program. Due to overwhelming demand, the retailer recently stopped taking pre-orders on the Wii U Deluxe Set and Basic Set. The new wait list program allows PowerUp Rewards members to sign up to be notified when additional quantities of the Wii U become available for purchase after the Nov. 18 launch.

“Demand for Wii U has been off the charts and we know many of our PowerUp Rewards members are anxious to get their hands on one,” said GameStop president Tony Bartel. “We’re happy to offer our customers this exclusive opportunity to join the wait list for this must-have item.”

PowerUp Rewards members can visit any U.S. GameStop store to join the Wii U wait list (limit two per household). Once on the list, customers will be notified when a Wii U is available for purchase and will have 48 hours to respond. There is no deposit required to join the wait list and enrolling does not guarantee a Wii U on or by a specified date or at a specific price.

Nintendo will implement a region lock process for its Wii U hardware, the company has confirmed to CVG.

It means that games bought in the US, Europe or Japan will only be accessible for machines built for those regions.

Region-locking devices is a longstanding Nintendo policy that has been in place across numerous games consoles including the 3DS, Wii, GameCube, N64, SNES and NES.

Platform holders Sony and Microsoft take a different stance to region-locking. Both allow publishers to decide whether they want to lock games to continents, of which in most cases they do not.

Does this really count as region locking? The console will play games regardless of region without even attempting to verify the region. The carts are just different, so you can't put them into another region console without modifying either the cart itself, or the console.

I read some rumors that the AMD graphics card in the wii u is based on Radeon E6760. Is that any good? I dont know much about graphic cards

UPDATE: I contacted AMD and Phil Hughes (Head of PR Product Team) responded. I asked him whether he could confirm these reports and he told me; “Kevin we can confirm that the Wii U will use AMD graphics but we have not provided any specifics on what silicon they will be using in the upcoming console.”

We’re basically back to square one on this rumor.

Obviously the head of Product PR wouldn’t let this info slip out even if it was true. I asked Hughes if there was any way to verify that an actual AMD employee sent out this email and he replied, “Sorry, I cannot confirm if its authentic or not.”

This pretty much means that the Wii U's GPU is equivalent to a Radeon HD 6570 GDDR5 or HD 6670 GDDR5 at the same clock speed. I apologize for double-posting but I didn't find an article like this posted after searching for it.

The E6760 is an embedded part, which, like they mentioned, seems fairly similar (though perhaps slightly lesser than) an HD6570 desktop card. That card is one notch up from the lowest end part for the 6000-series (the HD6450), and would generally not be considered something to buy if you want to do much gaming. Here is a review from the launch period. Basically, in PC space, this is almost as low end as you get in a discrete card these days.

Still, consoles can be a different ball game than PCs. The hardware is better than what the 360 or PS3 have. But, that being said, the hardware in those consoles was better, relatively speaking, to what was available at the time they launched.

Far as I know, the larger complaint is with the CPU being relatively weak.
