What would it be better to say? Yeah, we are releasing a new system at the end of this current generation cycle, but please don't call it next gen.

It is the start of the next gen because the support is going to be Wii U, PS4, 720 in the 8th generation.

Even Ouya will be competing with other consoles. Their approach and marketing may be different, but they are still selling a video game console, which puts them in competition with other video game consoles.

I don't think anyone is saying that about this particular issue (people have said that, but those people are stupid). Nintendo bringing third party games, MAJOR third party games (Black Ops 2, Arkham City, Assassin's Creed 3) and adding console specific features to entice players to buy it on their system shows their directly competing with MS and Sony. I think it's going to be slow to see hardcore gamers move to Nintendo for those games that have been known on other systems, but Nintendo certainly wants to take the market share away from Sony and MS or they wouldn't be striving for these games. I don't think Nintendo necessarily needs to compete with Microsoft and Sony on the graphics issue because their brand name is so strong and their first party titles are so stellar, so I'd agree with you if this is the approach you're going for but I think it's silly to say they aren't trying to take market share away from Sony or MS.

Yes, they are all competing in a sense, but they are looking to attract different parts of the market. Video gaming is a hell of a lot more wide spread then it was 20 years ago.

What is sad, even more so than the nintendo defense force going nuts, is that Sony and MS don't really give a shit about the U. Not enough to put pressure on them and release their sys asap.

They've been rather silent on the next generation of machines, but Reggie did claim that ports were "dramatically better" on the Wii U than the current systems on a CNN interview. Analysis from Digital Foundry and such would say otherwise. CoD was name-dropped and it is objectively the worst version available.

Obviously, yes, it's Nintendo, so they've adopted different strategies to succeed and have their huge portfolio of IP to lean on. They'd still do even better if they could recapture the developers and market segments they've managed to alienate, which has been the subject of a lot of speculation. To me, so far, the signs are more that they'll be back to being the odd man out for multi-console releases once the next Sony and MS consoles come along.

Which is not to say it's terrible or anything. I'm sure I'll buy one eventually.

I just wish, we had a thread for console discussion, and a thread just for news with the system its self. If I wanted to read stuff like this, id go to a console discussion thread.

Its just annoying to come to this thread to see if any new games, etc are announced, but then having to read the same tired debate for the 1 millionth time.

You miss read. Running homebrew is easy (albeit annoying, having to go through smash stack or some other hack to run them). Installing hbc is not.

Yes but Smash hack is just for the WII emulated, you cannot run HB on the wiiu menu

Any impressions on mario wiiu? I wasnt terribly impressed with super mario brothers on the wii when I went in expecting super mario world. Any chance the new one has more exploration and alternate paths or the like?

I would say it's just like any other 'New Super Mario Bros', except the world maps are connect in one larger map that you can scroll around (big whoop). I have yet to see any real secrets or alternate paths at all after beating 3 "worlds." I could be mistaken, but yeah... it's still not up to par with Super Mario World at all in my eyes.

Also, baby Yoshi don't grow up after eating enemies = total bullshit. They are just for holding in front of you and occasionally using their 'shake' ability (glowing in the dark, floating short distances, blowing bubbles, etc.).
