I'm only surprised that people didn't keep buying it anyways, not that it's a low quality, overpriced, rushed to market failbox.
Nintendo is done with consoles now. They would literally already have to be working on a new one to compete with the other next gen boxes and they would burn all the people they suckered into buying this one. The thing is, they didn't even lose money on it. It was such a cheap pos that they had a profit secured with the launch date stock.
Game Boy and Pokemon will keep them afloat this gen, if consoles are still a thing in 7 yrs, Nintendo will just be a software company...
"next gen" is such a fucking buzz word now, lol.
I honestly can't wait for the PS4 and 720 to get announced so people can start eating their words with what to expect from the next gen of consoles. I truly hope they don't think PS4/720 sales are going to be any better. There are too many people comfortable in the consoles they own now, and the differences won't be worth it to everybody.
People aren't going to pay $450 for a new Netflix box.
I'd wonder how the sales numbers would be if the WiiU hit a price cut when the first of the next two consoles comes out. I mean if you're looking at $250 vs $300-$450 during next holiday season.. that's a pretty massive difference for a lot of consumers, right?
I also don't think anyone is purchasing a WiiU with the assumption its going to be the most powerful, best looking console. Nobody bought the Wii for that purpose, its all about (mostly) first party titles, right? Nintendo just has to make sure they're able to take full advantage of that strength, or else they really will eventually be just a software company... And I'd hate for that to happen, but that could just be the fanboy and nostalgia talking.
Even if Nintendo stopped making consoles they would just focus 100% on handhelds and all their titles would be on their handhelds.
I dont see the Wii U being their last console. It may not be a colossal success, but they are still going to make some money off it. Hopefully they will get their act together within the next console or 2. If not, they will be in trouble.

People really underestimate the mountains of money that Nintendo is sitting on. Barring a disgruntled employee burning down their headquarters, Iwata and Miyamoto dying in a vehicular homicide and Wii U's suddenly exploding in people's living rooms, it would take an awful lot to reduce Nintendo to a software company.
Losing more than 70% of its value is hardly 'mountains of money.'

A company's value and it's stock prices aren't one and the same. Just because investors don't think the company is worth as much anymore doesn't mean their operating capital has suddenly dried up, but nice attempt there.
edit:
I should perhaps clarify a little bit there. Are Nintendo's earnings down over a couple years ago? Sure. Has their stock price tumbled because of it? Sure. Does a lowered stock price mean that money suddenly just disappeared? Nope.
I don't think anyone is arguing that Nintendo is top dog or anything here, but them running out of cash or suddenly becoming a software company and abandoning hardware is a long ways off. They'd have to continue tanking for some number of years to exhaust the profits that the last generation brought them by way of the DS and Wii.
Is Jefe one of those Nintendo haters?
It goes deeper than a price problem. The WiiU is barely surpassing the PS3 in its first quarter since launch, and the PS3 was both supply constrained and $100 more expensive.
Nobody is buying a Wii U, period, which is putting a lot of port efforts in the mire. Sometimes this is good news (Colonial Marines). Other times this is really really bad news for gamers (Rayman Legends). This kind of problem has a way of snowballing. Behold the Vita.
Nintendo isn't going Sega on us, they have way more money than Sega did by the time they abandoned hardware. But it's going to really cut into their cash reserves to ride out sagging hardware sales and shriveling 3rd party support until Pikmin and Zelda can raise the tide (and to be realistic, only Zelda can really do that, Pikmin is not a system-seller). It is also about 2 years too early to determine if dedicated home consoles are doomed, which would be an industry-wide problem, not just a Nintendo problem. You can see this in the worldwide handheld numbers, where everyone is having a bad 2013, including the 3DS.
I agree, unfortunately the titles that will eventually be the reason to own a WiiU like Zelda/Pikman/ etc just aren't out yet.. I can't imagine sales numbers going anywhere but up when these titles start to become available. Hell besides the deluxe the only game I bought was NSMBU, and I can count the number of times on my hands I've turned the console on since I bought it.. But next month we get Monster Hunter, and I'll probably burn the damn thing out playin that.
But for now? at least 50% of the titles on it are just ports. Sales numbers shouldn't be a surprise.. right? I mean besides people who anticipated a console shortage again, I bet most people who expect to buy one are just waiting for the first game they want to be released. That's what I would have done if I wasn't in that "I'm not checking every best buy/target/walmart/gamestop in the tri-state area like 2006" group, lol..
Is Jorma one of those NDF?
Mh is popular in the states? What were previous sales like?
