Nintendo Misses Wii U and 3DS Sales Targets, Posts $229m Loss.

Nintendo has just posted their financial results for the last fiscal year, and many of their projections fell short of their own expectations. Nintendo revised many of their forecast numbers downward in January, but the final results fell below even those altered projections in most areas.

Worldwide sales ended up at $5.6 billion, down from a revised forecast of $5.79 billion, which was once projected to be $9 billion in April 2013.

There was an operating income shortfall of $455 million, more than the predicted $343 million, and a far cry from the original prediction of a $981 million positive result.

Net income was up a bit from projections, allowing Nintendo net less loss to be $229 million as opposed to the predicted $245.4 million. All of this means Nintendo’s total loss for the last three years is $1.18 billion. This fiscal year, Nintendo is predicting a positive gain of $392.7 million.

This gen has been pretty terrible for everyone so far. A sign that we really didnt need a new gen yet.
Luckily for Nintendo they have about 5 or so AAA games coming out on the Wii U in a years time, and thats all they need, like always.
Zelda. Mario. Smash. Kart. Kirby/Yoshi/Kong/Metroid/Pikman/Parade. As long as those sell, nothing else matters to them.

I disagree. We definitely needed a new gen. Just needed developers to not be assholes. If GTA V, the last of us, FF LR, Gran Turismo and a few other games would have been released on next gen, I would be playing my ps4. Just because they haven't put out any decent games doesnt mean we didnt need a new gen.

They're not going to be at E3 (again), and will do that silly Nintendo Direct thing.

They aren't doing the live press conference thing, but still have announcements they'll be making at/during E3 via Nintendo Direct. They'll have a booth at the show too, so they may have new things demoed/livestreamed from that.

And as I said last year.. is it any different for those of us sitting at home to watch a Nintendo Direct vs an E3 press conference? Sure, maybe it's a little different for those attending E3, but I imagine they appreciate one less PC to wait in line for that they can just stay in their hotel rooms to catch.

How is it a lower viewership base? It's not like it won't be shown on the exact same websites that we'll be watching the other PCs on. Or is it because Nintendo Directs are only broadcast on a magical alternative internet that fewer people have access to?

Because I guarantee you there will be a fuckton more people watching E3 in general and will just pass on any Nintendo Directs. It's not that hard to comprehend.

EDIT: Not to mention E3 easily receives more media and press coverage than Nintendo Direct.

Except it's not like the media coverage is going to ignore the Nintendo Direct -- it's going to be treated just like part of E3 because, for all intents and purposes, it is Nintendo's PC at E3. The gaming sites are still going to cover it and live blog it and the general news sites will still talk about Nintendo since they're going to have a presence at E3. And, it's not like people watch the Sony and Microsoft PCs on E3's site (is it even streamed there?) -- they go to gametrailers, or IGN, or somewhere else to watch it, and all those sites will either have links or show the same thing.

If you want to argue that fewer people will watch it because it's Nintendo or it's on a different day, then fine, those are fair (and probably applicable) criticisms. But to argue that it's going to get less exposure because Nintendo is streaming their stuff from their HQ instead of going to E3 to put on a PC which most people will just watch a stream of is, imo, incorrect.

For what its worth, I paid next to zero attention to Nintendo videos at the last e3 cause I had no idea when or how to follow cause there was so many videos. One conference, from Sony and Microsoft, gave me majority of what I took away from e3, Nintendo missed out (on me any ways).

How was Nintendo easy to miss? THe official E3 websites all had Nintendo links, their schedule, etc.
I thought it would be a terrible mistake on Nintendo's part, but like Sera said, it made 0 difference to me in the end as it basically felt like they were at E3 anyway.

It was hard for me because they released so many videos for so many things, when all I had time for was a nice e3 presentation. And they really need someone who speaks English as a first language to do these; I don't care how important iwata is.

I remember last year Nintendo had like 10 different streams and all of them were laggy as fuck. Ended up watching on UK's Nintendo ustream channel and that was the less laggy one lol

I hope they get their streams better this year.
