I lost it at "adolescent male power fantasies."
Maybe she should talk about Samus. Nah, that wouldn't support her point I guess...
She can just talk about Other M, that'd serve her point.
Is it girl power to be all make-up'd out for the video or is it anti-feminist to cake on make-up to look good?
I remember watching a stupid ass Ricki Lake episode and this woman was saying how she was gunna lose weight so she'll get more gigs for her comedy routine. She was bombarded with "be proud of who you are! Don't change yourself!" blahblahblaaah. Yet, every single one of em was piled with make-up. I understand a little bit here and there but covered.
another thing but do people really think about these fucking tropes when they play games...? Do people really care about the damsel in distress or any of that bullshit. I just. I don't know. I feel like everyone is thinking into shit too much. Just play the god damn game.
Really old response: Women and some gay men are very similar in their interpersonal and social tactics, almost exclusively working in the covert. Whether it's forming alliances against "stronger" people or people in advantages positions, or just in terms of ways of expressing dislike of a person, object, or action. Striking while someone is perceived to be in a weaker state, or the group is on the side you favor but often not when the opposite is true.
Even on this board you can see these dynamics play out. Kuya is very overt most of the time and while he does favor his opinion more learned than it often is, he doesn't shy away from it. Milkster the opposite, while he does strike out on his own on occasion he is very quick to backpedal or try and save face - often waiting until a more opportune time to strike presents itself or someone shows their weak (or uneducated) hand.
If you frequent the FFXIAH boards at all, this same approach is taken by some of the more active posters. If sufficiently challenged, they will back off or avoid trolling/attacking people in a thread. If they perceive their target as weak or uneducated, it's pages full of circular or veiled attacks waiting for the subject to hang himself.
Then you have Celeste, whose vitriol was such that their meltdown was put on display. In the beginning of the thread his position and ideas were defended and as the thread went on and was shown for what it was, a catastrophic collapse of their mental state was viewed and ridiculed by all. The defenders no longer defending.
Rachael maddow put on a little weight
Jesus Christ I forgot that woman's kickstarter was a thing. What a sad point for women that they let this pisspot academic faux-chola represent any number of them. She's a huckster, a goddamned snake-oil salesman preying on the ill-informed and overly informed alike.
that celeste meltdown was amazing to watch
Posted that Girl writes what video on fb. my sister proceeded to freak out. lol. only caption I put on it was "long video" and then I got called misinformed along with the girl in the vid. Derp
I didn't really find anything wrong with her argument. She's saying the damsel in distress trope is demeaning and patronizing to women and it is still alive today. I don't know if you guys genuinely disagreed with this or if you just took issue with her appearance and speech pattern.
mostly the sharpie eyebrows
I don't disagree with her, but I only learned 1 thing from that video, and that's how StarFox Adventures was made. If it was 22 minutes expanding on that the video would have been amazing, because it could have been an exploration on how the under-representation of realistic, strong female protagonists in video games comes from the top down. The failure of educational systems to attract women into engineering, development and business degrees. Sexist hiring practices in the west and in Japan. A creative arm constantly being bent to corporate interests. A market that's numb to the risks taken by studios breaking molds instead of following trends. This is shit that I think would keep me interested but she only spends ~3 minutes talking about it.
Instead it's her wasting a lot of teaching moments saying things one could learn in a day spent on Wikipedia and TV Tropes. Except the internet paid her $158,922 to do it. This has 'vanity project' written all over it and it bugs me that this is the best she can do. If she spoke to other people working in the industry or who analyze the industry, it doesn't show.
For some reason i doubt a person who's definition of hardcore research is to only read a page on tvtropes and claims legos are an inherently sexist toy because some of them are pink is in any way intelligent. She has a history of outright lies and half truths and in many ways this damages the movement she claims she's for while being one of it's most damaging influences today.
Let's take the dinosaur planet section.
Rare took a game which might have had trouble selling due to not being an established franchise and remade it so that it WOULD sell via taking advantage of Starfox's popularity instead of taking the risk of noone noticing it. She's implying and/or claiming it's sexist to make a fairly logical business decision which has been done before and often. Prince for example has taken songs from bands he was writing for and used them for himself whenever he decided that the song is too good for anyone else but Prince.
Then we get into the Princess Peach section. Yes it is ridiculous how often she gets kidnapped. That however doesnt matter. In the End peach is still a prosperous and apparently successful ruler of her entire kingdom. Same plot picked up over and over? Well of course it is. that's what happened when you have a cash cow and want guaranteed money. Repeat the same junk over and over ad infinum.
Let's get into that Peach game she likes to bash so much. Simply bothering to read the story in the INSTRUCTION manual would have revealed the plot to basically be centered around the fact that Peach is the only one with enough willpower and self control to not be completely crippled by Bowser's new weapon and then she goes off to do the saving herself. Princess peach is the pinkest character know to existence. She practically exudes a visible aura of pink like she was a DBZ character. But nope. Game is sexist because of all the pink despite the fact that she's basically just got established as having the strongest mind/will/etc out of anyone in the entire series and the lack of caring about actually playing the game long enough to watch the opening scene. .Then she outright dismisses anything that changed the paradigm like all the misc Mario spinoffs.
The fact that apparently trying to help/save another human being and especially one the protagonist is close to is now some giant basketball game is ridiculous and insulting to said people in distress.
Then we have the Zelda section. A monarch and ruler of her kingdom once again. One of the most powerful beings in this universe. Ayup. This game is sexist since she's targeted. Nevermind that over the years she's steadily become more and more prepared for this Ganondorf bullshit. Never mind that in Twilight Princess which she specifically cited we had a strong female character as not only a protagonist(lost my cd so didn't finish but the link and her are practically a pair in a non-Navi way) but she can actually talk unlike link. The entire game so far that I've seen is basically her ordering link around because he's basically HER sidekick. Even the power that Gannondorf got. Where did it come from? He had to steal it from a woman because he was a weak and pathetic man just like his tribe always told him he was.
Twilight princess is a tale of how a woman is dis-empowered by a man and fights back to reclaim the power that is rightfully hers. As for Zelda in twilight princess? She's just chillin not even giving a crap. "Oh Ganon tried to steal my kingdom again. I wonder how he'll fail this time."
See how easy it was to twist around that entire thing? That's what Anita does with every single video she makes.
Even her little Photoshopped "fixes" to her favorite characters to hate on (Peach and Zelda) are insulting to men, women, and the intelligence of the human race. Her fix is basically just changing their clothes. This doesn't sound sexist to anyone at all? Her best fix for women is make them like men? Not be more active in fighting back to the point that they cant be taken hostage. Nope. Dress em up as men. Nevermind that there are plenty of strong powerful women in videogames cropping up. Nevermind that Samus was one of the strongest female characters until a game that NOONE LIKED specifically because it dis-empowered her previously established character. Nevermind that games have the option to pick/create a male/female character nowadays. Nevermind that some of the strongest people in many videogame worlds are women now. The women are clearly object. She forces a false dichotomy in her narrative and the method usually used is the male power fantasy. A man could run around in nothing but panties+ ballgage while on a leash and be blatantly there for women to ogle but no matter what it's going to be a male power fantasy.
It's sort of like how comics get blamed for being sexist yet there's a recommendation image showing comics with at least 50-70 strong female characters lying around before we get into how a staple of comics has long been strong female characters. Claiming they dont have them usually just shows complete ignorance.
This is why I play as a girl in MMORPGs.
Pink used to be a male color. Feminists should be happy we took it from them.
Plus pink is just fucking awesome and they gotta let this petty little shit go.
Being a feminist or arguing feminist principles is just used as a shit test for most women anyway.
