I find it interesting that we aren't allowed to consider it an insult, but should be mindful of insults we say to other people.

That is not at all true. You might say that in your experience it is most often used that way, but it is not the case that everywhere it's used it is most commonly an insult.

If you go online (Twitter, tumblr, buzzfeed, Jezzabel, Xojane, etc) and search posts with the term cis in them, more time than not it will be used in derogatory manner.

If a person finds the term black offensive but African American not, you probably wouldn't hesitate to call them African American instead. Are only minirities deserving of that respect?

Usually I call them by their names rather than assume black = African. If I said 'hay, woman!' instead of 'hay, Ksandra!' it would be weird, too. Epithets are funny that way, the intent is usually clear but that doesn't make 'woman' an insult outside of its directed context. If I say someone is cis because they're not trans, and you think it's an insult, it's not me that has the problem.

The term is new to a lot of circles, though. I've only ever heard it used as an insult, usually attached to some other derogatory term.

Also, don't be silly Ksandra. If I've learned anything about my privilege, it's that cis people and white people and men especially don't get to protest to labels.

Black isn't offensive. African American is stupid to describe most black people. Samuel L. Jackson is black, Charlize Theron is African American.

Yup. This exactly. The tone of cis used online and the VEERRRYY few cases irl (for me) has been mostly negative and demeaning regardless of it's definition. To me it's a slur.

When someone says you're cis scum, they're insulting you.
When someone says you are cisgender, they're not necessarily insulting you. I thought you'd accepted this not fifty posts ago.

I get that but I think it comes down to respecting what people want to be called without judging. If being called cis feels insulting to a person or a community, then why do it? There is no reason that insult those here where that word is known to be insulting.

The only reason to is either ignorance or to rub it in which is just as bad.

There are words that are commonly agreed to be slurs and there are those that aren't. If we take your position, I can just yell that banana pudding is a slur against me and I need you to stop. But banana pudding isn't a slur and I'm just being ridiculous.

With all the PC word police out there I don't know how many times I've been told it didn't matter what I thought of the word or it's usage, if someone takes offense to it, you shouldn't use it.
