A little bit of both, honestly. Same old relationship, but this time they dealt with criticism worse than they ever had before (saying they shouldn't be expected to be impartial, coordinated articles attacking the gamer identity, silencing criticism with sexism accusations, etc.).

Journalists talking amongst themselves about how much they get bribed, even to complain about how much these bribes are? No, I don't think that's a good thing.

That's not what is happening in that thread. Orland is saying that the payola wouldn't pay rent, therefore accusations that game journos are all in the pocket of PR firms fall flat because that isn't a sustainable path to take. Jesus man stop reading breitbart.

What? They're basically saying that GamePublishingCompanyA paying for journalists to go to Vegas to preview their new game literally cannot pay rent. Can it influence coverage? Sure. But you aren't living day-to-day on trips to Vegas.

If you think these people getting offered free trips to places that will advance their careers isn't an incentive enough for them to be disingenuous to their readers, then I've got a boat to sell you.

Make no mistake, breitbart is a shitty outlet, but the person hwo did this investigation and the e-mails they leaked are legit, and they ARE concerning.

Note: I haven't read (and don't intend to read) the e-mail chain. Gamergate is old news as far as I'm concerned. No one's particularly interested in listening to anyone who doesn't already agree with them on either side of the fence.

He's talking about review/preview events, Capcom's Captivate, etc. Basically anything where a publisher hooks them up with travel/hotel in exchange for coverage.

I find most of the shit about GamerGate to be pretty lame. We're at a point in the life of "games journalism" where having to go to the major sites is becoming increasingly irrelevant. You don't need a review to tell you if a game is good or not, just watch some random dude streaming it on Twitch or a random YouTube Lets Play and make your own decision. Just find a personality you find entertaining and have some fun watching their shit.

I thought the role PR plays in games journalism was very transparently discussed back in 2012, among other places on Kotaku (zounds). The suggestion that game journos take these trips, cover them, and then try pull the wool over anybody's eyes in a 2013 email chain is...odd.

"Great, yeah, send me another T-shirt for me to toss out or leave sitting on a desk for three months, like I don't have enough crap sitting around everywhere as it is. I can't remember the last time I read a review for anything. Shit's pretty pointless in this day and age when you have a considerable amount of outlets to make your own determination. Silly as hell when I see commercials for such and such game winning 85+ awards, and it wasn't even released yet at the time.

Gamergate makes them seam more relevent than they actually are, wonder if traffic to the gaming journo sites has increased since this whole shit started. (I know the answer is of course)

Ya know To bring this back a bit I feel a little sorry for quine's or w/e ex, he never intended for any of this to happen, just wanted to get his experiance of a terrible relationship off his chest, he had no way of knowing he would cause one shitty shitstorm.
