should have hit her with a dongle
should have hit her with a dongle
dongle is a generic term for things that get plugged into a computer.
forking is creating an alternate implementation of something.
humans and gorillas were forked from a common ancestor.
that one comment means she wouldn't be able to do her job as a developer evangelist anymore, i think the amanda blum link goes into it.
thx
I'm not sure that "developer evangelist" is really an actual job anyway.
not anymore it isn't
there's 2 main types, a marketing person who can talk like a developer, or a developer with social skills. the role is to say "hey developers, our shit is super cool, integrate it into what you're doing". Along with some basic knowledge of how to get started.
if dongle jokes are wrong i don't want to be right
I may have misread, but I don't think he was saying to do that. He was explaining what Minnesota Nice is.
Edit: @Hey
making dongle jokes is being an asshole?
The puns were without target, not using abusive language, they were literally as tame as sex jokes get, from all accounts. There also did not appear to be any INTENT to create a hostile environment, just nerd humor. If they had been told that their jokes were offending someone (which isnt, by any means, an obvious assessment) and persisted, then yeah they're being assholes.
That's not what happened here.
Good ol Hey. Jokes about rape are just fine, but gtfo with those dongles!
I don't even think they "deserved to be called out" just more along the lines of if it was really upsetting her, then she only had two adult options: shut up and deal, or tell them. It doesn't in any way mean they were being assholes though.
Men aren't the only ones who make dongle jokes.

While making those jokes in a crowded conference room is not the best judgment because you don't know who might overhear or misconstrue them, Adria Richards has a history of going around looking for things to get offended about and blowing them out of proportion.
Then she makes statements like "Black people cannot be racist against white people" and comparing herself to Joan of Arc.

While I don't doubt that sexism is still prevalent in many industries, this was not sexism. Juvenile, perhaps, but not sexist.
And even if she legitimately took offense to what they said, she still should have tried to resolve the problem privately before going on a public witch-hunt which resulted in a lose-lose for pretty much all parties involved. Both companies have had their reputations dragged into this, two people have been fired over something that could have been resolved internally, and like anything that brings attention on the internet, the reasonable voices have been drowned out by the extremes which are then used to "prove the original point".
her job is to socialize with male nerds who would even think a dongle joke is funny in the first place.
Ah... so she's an average tumblr user.
