I'm saying if you want to ban people from science because you think they're a terrible person then humanity is the victim. Should we disavow any knowledge of experimental results made by Nazis? Should we throw out decades of microbiological advancements made by exploiting a black woman? I'm pretty sure most of the people who've lived since the Renaissance have been sexist, racist, violent, etc. so how far back do we take science to appease your mundane sensibilities?

Did you not JUST see me link to my previous post where I posted a bunch of links on it? Did you NOT understand that all those examples stemmed from the fact that the discussion had led to the discovery of those cases because the topic of "accomplished men in science who do fucked up shit" came up because of this whole shirt thing?

I truly believe that Taylor didn't even understand at all why wearing that shirt was the wrong thing to do. That's why his apology was so sincere and accepted by (at least) the feminist spaces that I operate in. So when people say raising awareness doesn't do anything, I roll my eyes.

Gonna ask one more time. Do you or do you not understand the concept of picking your battles? Because you sure as hell don't seem to from what you are posting.

Which is totally the same level of importance as a guy wearing a semi-inappropriate shirt. Right?

So you were there or...? Because that's from an Atheism Plus blog, the people who brought you "That man in the elevator raped me by asking me to come back to his room for coffee".

I really don't see what the big deal is here. Dude wore a clearly inappropriate shirt, people were like "dude, your shirt" dude was like "oh right, shouldn't have worn that, sorry, science time" end of story.

Mother fuckers need to stop judging people by their actions and judge them by their intentions, just like you judge yourself. Does anyone here think that any of those 40 year old virgins want to keep women out of their field?

I don't think any rational person thinks this guy was intentionally stirring shit up with his shirt - he thought "awesome day, gonna wear an awesome shirt" without realizing that it is inappropriate and sexist - and when it was pointed out he correctly apologized. I didn't see anyone, for example, calling for his resignation or for him to be fired.

instead of supporting hate campaigns targeting parents that give their sons legos, daughters dolls, and making them cry apologizing the day after, I'd rather you support campaigns (or start your own) that positively reinforce parents that give their daughters/boys a range of toys
ITT: buying kids toys is a hate campaign.

Why pick battles when we can fight them all at once? It's not like we have a shortage of feminists in the world, and we need to prioritize.

Because that works so well right? I mean, there is no such thing as nitpicking right? People clearly don't ever get tired of hearing the same thing every day. Gosh, this thread doesn't even have any examples of people explaining that to you.

    Oh wait.

The phrase exists because it means something idiot.

Those people aren't going to listen anyway, so nothing is lost. People who want to listen and understand the issues so they can better themselves, and try to make the world a better place for those around them, even if just a little, will listen.

Meh, that post about science being a culmination of white male values obnoxious, dishonest, etc etc would have to be in another thread if you'd want to actually debate science. What you said about humanities is fine imo - it's never a hard science - you misunderstood what I was going for. I just want some accountability for what you're doing, and not just some bullshit "raising awareness!"

But pls, bear with me for a sec now,

Are you SERIOUSLY surprised Taylor didn't even understand at all why wearing that shirt was the wrong thing to do?

Your target audience is privileged, that's why they're your target audience. Privilege means they DO NOT UNDERSTAND the points you have. YOU live with them, THEY DO NOT EVEN KNOW ABOUT THEM. Am I right so far?

Why are you, and your feminists in the spaces you operate in, so quick to attack the privileged for doing something they do not understand?

This is like some kind of twisted reverse privilege if you're OK with the way shit is going down. It's like a teacher happening by a disenfranchised youth and yelling at them for not being educated and having resources... like, what the fuck man?

So when people say raising awareness doesn't do anything, I roll my eyes.
Yes, you FORCED an apology out of someone and brought them to tears after the greatest day of their lives... kudos. Are you really OK with that? That's the position you and your feminists take? This was good work?

C'mon.. you think this was a win for getting more women involved in science?

Are you serious? You gave me some metaphor likening this situation to the issues with boy/girl toys and asked me a question about it... so I answered in terms of your metaphor. You quoted that and totally ignored the context, wtf?

No one is really judging him. Really, everyone gets he wasn't trying to cause a problem. That's okay, but it's still important to address it, so next time he doesn't make the same mistake, and hopefully neither does anyone else. It's okay to not be perfect, and to make mistakes, or even to do things that hurt people. The important thing is to learn from it, and try to do better next time. Which the guy clearly understands, hence the apology.

It's okay that he didn't understand why it was a problem. But that's exactly why it's important to explain why.

They are attacking his action, not who he is. "He wore a sexist shirt" is not "he is sexist".

Because there's no danger of turning people who might be on your cause off because you bitch about every little fucking thing to the point where you make a scientist who accidentally wore a shirt a friend gave him to a press conference cry.

    Oh wait.

    Guess that happened huh?
