How would you suggest feminists help him understand why his shirt was inappropriate for an international event in a field where women are historically marginalized?

Really man? You're going with, "the only thing these feminists could think of is blowing up all over him and harassing him until he cried and apologized"

How about this,

1) control yourself
2) clearly outline your goals - is it to get matt taylor to cry and apologize for the shirt he just wore? Or is it to get more women in science?
3) get shit done to further your goal(s).

What happened here was they skipped 1), lost their shit, forgot their goals in 2), and instead completed the goal where they make a grown man cry on TV and get people all around the world one step closer to hating the word feminist

I'm not involved with this in a deep level, I suspect others in here are - I've touched on a bunch of things that are line with the goal of getting more women in science, plenty of people out there are doing good work on that. Trying to get a guy to cry about his choice of shirt is a stupid fucking goal and I hope you actually understand that but will continue to refuse because your internet ego is too large to admit you were wrong in your knee-jerk reaction

It is important though. The big problems are symptoms of a lot of little things. Also, it's a waste of time to try to change people that far gone. They know it's wrong, and don't care, and are never going to change. The people who make small mistakes are exactly the people we should be trying to change, because they are more likely to be good people, who want to do the right thing. They just need to be made aware that they aren't already.

But you're sitting here defending the actions of people with the emotional control of a 15 year old girl. Other feminists (maz) are defending this. You're throwing in with these "different people" with "different goals". They're keyboard warriors whose goal was harassing someone, that is very clear. Their goal was not furthering women in science, yet you're acting like this actually did that and it's crazy... unless I'm misunderstanding, are you saying this wasn't in an effort to increase the # of women in science?

Yes, because the only way to stop someone like that is to stop them from having any desire to do it in the first place. It's too late to do anything about people like that. It's better to focus on people who want to do good, rather than try to talk to walls. By teaching those people better ways to act, they will hopefully go on to teach their kids the same lessons, and then they will grow up to be respectful people who would never even think about sexually harassing someone. You can't solve widespread problems by going after one person at a time. You need go after the root causes. And those are tons of small things.

He's not entirely wrong. There is some merit to the notion of "get them while they're young". I wouldn't say the current approach is accomplishing anything other than torching the countryside, but at a conceptual level it's not quite as outlandish as you're painting it.
