It's okay that he didn't understand why it was a problem. But that's exactly why it's important to explain why.
No one is really judging him. Really, everyone gets he wasn't trying to cause a problem. That's okay, but it's still important to address it, so next time he doesn't make the same mistake, and hopefully neither does anyone else. It's okay to not be perfect, and to make mistakes, or even to do things that hurt people. The important thing is to learn from it, and try to do better next time. Which the guy clearly understands, hence the apology.

Idk, I guess it isn't black and white but it sure seems like you supporting what happened. Too be fair, you did say he didn't deserve the outright insults he got in the media, but I wont quote that because I like to take things out of context that fit my narrative :]

"still important to address it so he doesn't make the same mistake again, and hopefully nobody else will too" is so laughable...Sure, nobody's going to wear it in a science conference (maybe?)... but way to win the battle and lose the war. I bet my life after this there will be more people wearing shirts like that in public and laughing about it than there will be people who make the decision to not wear one of those shirts.

How many students/professors around the world in science classrooms will wear something like that for lulz? Man, if I were a women seeking equality I would be so pissed right now

The people being misogynistic are a symptom of misogyny. Got it. You have no fucking clue what you are talking about.

Yes, the actions of the misogynistic are a symptom of misogyny. Is that a controversial statement? If they were misogynists they wouldn't do misogynistic things. So it stands to reason, the best way to prevent people from do misogynistic things, is to prevent them from becoming misogynists in the first place.

Because anyone who is being misogynistic is already lost. Just burn anyone who has ever done anything misogynistic in their lives. We must have a state run program to indoctrinate... er... educate the children. Only then can we win the war.

    Just shut up.

Even if not, they are far, far more difficult to change than people who actually want to.

So go for the easy targets. The dude who wore a shirt his female friend gave him as a gift. That she made. Make him cry. That'll show them.

Requesting a thread title change to be "ThinK Shitposting: hey's Guide to Herpderping about Feminism".

And I'm saying he wasn't a valid target to begin with. Instead of attacking EVERYONE, attack the people who are ACTUALLY causing harm. But you'd rather pick on people.

You said it yourself. You'd rather go after a dude wearing the shirt than the person sexually harassing people.

Point to me one scientist who felt that shirt offended them.

And the idea that people perpetuating a culture where women don't feel welcome isn't causing harm is a joke, right?

For how much you SJW types love to go on about how society is institutionally racist and sexist and homophobic it seems like what you love even more is to disregard that and treat any (perceived) manifestation of racism, sexism, or homophobia in the behavior of an individual as a scarlet letter on the soul of that person.

Go after him? No. But i do think it's wise to explain to him why his shirt wasn't okay to wear.

Misogyny is more than just sexism. I don't think anyone who does something sexist is a sexist.

    Clarify for me, again.

Which is more important to go after? The person who wore a shirt a handful of people find offensive, or a person who sexually harasses people in the workplace?

    For who?

Someone in a position to actually stop the individuals who are sexually harassing their coworkers should do so. Obviously though, most people are not in such a position.

I mean Nazis who fled prosecution assimilated into their communities and became indistinguishable family men but I guess killing Jews for a living is just easier to let go of than advanced sexism.

I don't really think that's a comparable situation. In that case there was an extremely strong, and sudden influence from others around them, and acting as part of a group would lead to people doing things they would never otherwise do. Once that group ceases to exist, and that influence goes away, it becomes a lot easier to step back and think about what you were doing.
