Nothing ever goes away by treating the symptom. If you really think society raises people to be sexist, then attacking individual people for their sexist behavior is at best going to make them become covertly sexist and at worst going to generate a backlash of sexism.

Picking your battles is very important, because when you cry about every single solitary thing that upsets you, people think you're a whiner, and start to think that there isnt a problem. And when you start to bitch and cry "misogyny" and "patriarchy" to everything, then people will start to ignore you.

Yeah this got pretty silly. I think the shirt is fine. The response was ridiculous. Whole thing's been textbook cognitive dissonance / feminist hypocrisy imo. Sucks because I don't think feminism should be getting this kind of exposure nor is it good to have people like this be a part of the movement

I've wanted to make this post for a while and I think now's a good time as any. It's gonna make you lose your shits I'm sure, but bear with me for a second. Science and the scientific method are mostly a culmination of white, settler colonialist values that have been imposed on most of the world and have their own inherent agendas and biases.

DON'T GET ME WRONG, I still think it's the best system of values we could come up with since we're not a perfect species, but that does NOT mean that you can discount things like gender studies and the experiences and feelings of women/survivors/minorities. A bunch of men sitting around shouting SCIENCE, EVIDENCE, SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE for every single situation and claim is obnoxious and dishonest.

And before you ask, no this does not mean that I think gender studies and experiences and feelings of women/survivors/minorities should outweigh or even be treated equally as scientific evidence. I think that depends on the situation that you wish to analyze. Do we need to form hypotheses and running experiments to find out whether a shirt is deemed discriminatory and offensive in a professional workplace? No, fuck you. There's enough of a majority of women and others complaining about it for us to figure that shit out without scientific evidence. So why do women and feminists complain about stuff like this? Because that's important too.

Was banned over football, wanted to post this days ago, despite this being purely anecdotal I did want to say this as one of the few people still left around here in a relevant (to the convo) STEM field. Not meant to refute the shirt being a bad idea, just want to show the difference in opinion between those in the field and out of the field.

"As someone deeply embroiled in the science community, and currently in a PhD physics program comprised of at least 65% women (some of whom are very, very vocal about current feminist topics on fb) I can tell you first-hand that I have never seen so many pissed off female academics.

And with the exception of one or two of them what they're pissed off about is people caring more about some shirt than the landing itself. The resounding sentiment seems to be that as much as they do care about gender inequality in STEM fields, as scientists, it matters far less to them than the actual pursuit of the science they love.

Personally, I think it was stupid as shit to wear that shirt in a workplace in general, but people saying that the shirt represents the problem with women in science seems to be (at least locally) completely missing the point."

So for the locally relevant sample group of ACTUAL women in STEM fields, the distraction the shirt provides and takes away from the landing itself is doing more harm than the good that could ever come from educating people about shirts.

I find it hilarious that you can even imagine the concept of middle ground.

The middle ground is not calling for his firing, not acting like his shirt is the worst thing in the world but still pointing out that objectifying women in a workplace where women are historically marginalized is inappropriate.

Which is basically what happened, unless you take the most extreme few Twitter posts and act like that was the median feminist reaction.
