I think some of the claims are just based on perceptions of impropriety. Personally I can't say for sure one way or another whether there were direct tradeoffs, but it does give me a more negative view of the incestuous nature of a segment of the video game journalism community (which I think a lot of people don't hold in high regard to begin with). Honestly, it's probably not that much different in a lot of other professional industries, but it's a smaller community, it's less formal, there's a lot more PR involved, so when something like this comes along it blows up in the same way a political or entertainment scandal would.
As for trolling over Depression Quest, I think part of it was because it was generally a mediocre game (basically a choose your own adventure style game) that centered on a social issue, and a lot of people felt it got unfairly praised because of that. Lots of comparisons to Anita Sarkeesian, etc.
In all honesty if you had asked me about it before all of this went down, I would've said that's an unfair comparison to make. At this point, while I find it extremely uncomfortable to see someone's personal life being dragged into the public like this, if the core allegations are true I'm disappointed in the hypocrisy and I'm also disappointed in the way a lot of people are trying to spin the entire thing as slut-shaming or a misogynistic attack. It's unfortunate that both extremes suck up all the air in the room and turn it into something that nobody in the middle wants to be a part of (see Totalbiscuit, Jontron, etc.).
