And this is the beast. Without changing the entire damned world, the only way I can see of creating a group that make unswayed enthusiast press is by running on something like a wikipedia donation model. You'd still probably need to run ads, but if you had an operations team that strictly went to non-game sources, it might work. Or if you did run any gaming ads, you'd have to do it in a very public way, and using something like Project Wonderful. If they want an ad on the site, no special agreements, they just have to be the highest bidder out of everyone else that wants the time.
Of course, this still leaves the issues of access, embargoes, etc. but I'm headed out, so no time for a hugepost atm.
I fail to understand how it's magically impossible for game journalism to not be in bed with game makers when book and movie reviewers aren't.
For the large part, movie and film reviewers who are consisted credible professionals and not just any schlub with a blog work for actual news media organizations with a diverse array of ad revenue (and other) sources; rather than being standalone businesses that depend on only movie/book ads.
Is that a "They're poor so it's expected" argument?
deffo
Just to echo what Callisto said. How can they do their job if they aren't granted some form of access to the media?
Movies and Books are also not $60 a pop, so right away it's easier to outright afford covering those. Beyond that, a large amount of book and movie reviewers are tied to other news outlets to provide a different stream of income.
So maybe the solution is that video games need to be tied to other streams of revenue other than video game ads/publisher good will.
That did not answer my question. Can your mind be changed? There is no value in engaging with you if you're simply here to tell us how you feel.
If those were the rules they'd have to shut down the whole poopdeck
Fair! But I know that I can just ignore his posts if he's not here to discuss with a semi-open mindset.
Edit: on mobile, so apologies and all that.
You do realize that not getting review copies was (still is?) Standard practice if you said something to piss off a PR person. It's incredibly easy for a large company to not give a single fuck about getting reviews.
Change my mind that human beings care more about their public appearance / saving their ass more than their integrity? Probably not, because as I said, there are not many human beings out there who think being labeled as a piece of trash who comes clean is better than lying to keep their public appearance solid.
Perhaps the real question is: can we find some way to take off your white blinders?
Why are you attacking me? I haven't stated any position on Zoe Quinn recently nor do I intend to. Back the fuck up, yo.
And I also didn't say that you disagreeing with me is a bad thing. I just said that you aren't open to discuss the situation and have stated that your mind cannot be changed. That's your perogative and your stance, that's on you. But that also means it's not a discussion. It's standing on a platform.
Are you mistaking me for Correction?
More strawmen, awesome.
In your dumb comparisons there was a lot of circumstantial and physical evidence to condemn the people who lied.
In this case, it's one retard with a youtube channel fabricating claims from thin air about a review that was never written.
You want that review to be real, and you want Zoe Quinn, Sarkeesian and Jenn Frank to be liars because reasons in the face of piles of evidence to the contrary, reasons you probably are incapable of saying out loud.
