Oilers are in prelim talks with Hall about an extension. Hooray for them being pro-active on something for once!
.... unless there's some form of "August Fools" I've never heard of, and they're really thinking of signing Wes Walz or something completely random.

That's an Eriksson-level steal of a contract. Amazing.

Bergevin's been doing some good things. Between their draft and this, that's a good start for the new GM. That begin said, it sounded like Patches was willing to take a hometown discount regardless, as long as he got a longer term. I'm sure a positive relationship with Bergevin was paramount to that though, and that he would only take the discount with a GM he trusted.

I dont think hometown applies to him: hes not french, not from quebec, nor canadian.
But he is probably the top fan favorite, on the team. If not, hes top 3 between subban and price.

The way I've always heard the phrase, hometown discounts don't necessarily mean heritage or background from a team. Just a team that drafted a player or they've been with for years.

I have a bad feeling that the NHLPA is going to do a proposal that asks to get rid of the cap or change it to MLB type where you have to pay luxury tax if you go over.

I wouldn't mind a luxury tax, although the salary cap is why the Rangers are who they are right now, having some leeway to go over the cap would help.
