Mostly because of Ehrhoff, I think. Because of the impending CBA issues, he wanted a lot of his money up front, and they did it by giving him an $8m signing bonus last year, and $5m this year. Richards did the same thing in NY, he got paid $10m last season in signing bonuses and is due $8m this year.

Part of the reason the Hawks had to blow up their roster after the Cup was that Toews, Kane, and a couple others all hit the absurd performance clauses built into their ELCs during the playoff run, Hawks had something like $2.2m in bonuses hitting their 2011 cap figure. I think Toews got like $600-800k extra for winning the Conn Smythe.

I was talking bout Price contract beeing good and bad, because long contract is meh for Goalies because most goalie won't keep their #1 spot in THEIR TEAM after they hit 30 years
