What's even crazier is how much the contracts go up by for middle of the road players now. By 2017, Sidney Crosby's $8.7m pricetag will be a middle of the road 3rd liner at this rate

Maybe he'll seek an 8.7% raise on his 8.7mil cause you know everything has to be 8.7 or 87 to him.

Considering how stagnant the economy is looking to be over the next couple of years I can't see that happening. The salary cap is eventually going to have to stop going up.

Sidney Crosby only drives at one speed; 87 MPH. When he approaches a red light, he cruises on through at a careful 8.7 MPH.

He's said it a couple of times on twitter and others have quoted him on it. Latest example I could find was here: https://twitter.com/ESPNChiHawks/sta...67830679134208

So, those teams with cap space, anybody want a slightly used Jeff Schultz? How about an end-of-life Roman Hamrlik? Supplies are limited, act now and SAVE!

Yeah, i've kept reading it as well. Just can't picture him in anything but a Coyotes uniform. But everyone has said he wants to stay out west and still win. If Phoenix can't get their shit together, that basically leaves Los Angeles and Anaheim. Unless he will move NW to San Jose or Vancouver.

Honestly, with the crop of guys still available, if the Caps just used all their money to lock up Carlson, Alzner, and Johansson for the next six years, I'd be happy.

I seriously don't understand why so many teams aren't happy to just develop their young players instead of paying free agents gobs of money for long term deals thus taking a spot for a young guy in the system to come up.

It's hit and miss though. Caps have had a healthy smattering of FAs and kids try to lock down 2C, to no avail. Ribeiro should change that trend, God willing, but it's been really frustrating over the last five or six years, especially last season when Backstrom was hurt.

One of the big things they talked about with the Kings when they won the cup. Hardly any of their players where UFA signing. Mitchell, Scudari and Gagne were (Gagne not really an impact at all). The rest where developed (Brown, Quick, Doughty, Kopitar, Martinez, Lewis, Voynov, King, Nolan) and others were trades (Carter, Richards, Penner, Williams, Stoll, Green, Fraser) and most of the trades involved players that were developed in the system (Johnson, Visnovsky, Simmonds, Schenn, O'Sullivan).

Kinda shows you don't need to spend crazy on UFAs to win. Draft well, identify the players that will be part of your core, and move you other assets into players that support the core.

LOL saw Nash traded to Los Angeles. Realized it was the wrong Nash, wrong LA team, and totally wrong sport.

Everyone's a copycat though. After Chicago won the Cup, everyone was saying you don't need a big name goalie to win. Then Thomas and Luongo met in the SCF, and all of a sudden franchise goalies were everything, and Rinne and Bryzgalov got fucking paid. I think the reaction to the Kings winning was that bringing in two high profile guys from outside the organization (Carter, Richards) whether through trades or FA can work. Minny obviously thinks so.
