My family was damn poor when I was growing up. I remember having when my parents were working 24/7, they had an older couple look after me and brothers. Basically became our non-related grandparents. Anyways, the old guy fashioned me a crude hockey stick from some spare wood lying around. So it's not a completely untrue notion

As you guys know I'm a relatively new fan to hockey, but I never pass up an opportunity to rib my parents for not doing what was necessary to get me into the sport. For fuck's sake I used to watch Mighty Ducks the day before football games just to get psyched up and I played street hockey all the damn time, but they never took the hint. My mom now defaults to saying it was too expensive anyway.

My garage door has 300+ dents in it, like Crosby's laundry machine, from me playing street hockey in the driveway as a kid. Now, being a 1-car wide driveway, I can't even stickhandle realistically in it anymore, my height, reach, and consequently longer stick mean that even standing in the dead center of the driveway, the circumference of my reach bisects both walls lining the sides of the driveway.

Part of the problem was living most of my pre-teen life in Kentucky. Closest hockey market would have been Nashville several hours away, but I'm certain Louisville had some sort of hockey program back then.

All I know is when I'm ready to have kids, I'm not screwing this up.

Hockey was so popular around where I lived growing up that when I was in the 4th-6th grades, I had to be at the arena for practice at 4:30AM on a school day. Every single rink time in all arenas were booked solid throughout the year.
