I first saw the NHL's offer and panicked, then I hoped it was like people that ask for raises at work.
If you're making say $15/hr and want $17, ask for $20 type thing. Then their compromise is what you really wanted in the first place.
Then I remembered it's Bettman and got worried again

Those are "reasonable" low-balls. I'm guessing that they are looking to get about halfway to all of those things, about 51-52% revenue, a few more RFA years, 4 year ELCs, 8-10 year contract length limit, but I doubt arbitration will be done away with.

Alternatively they are gunning hard for a few of those and will "be willing to drop" some of those demands should some of the others be met.

Also I think the contract year limit will probably be a concession. It's a really stupid thing for the owners to push anyways. "SAVE US FROM OURSELVES WAH."

They should just put a cap on a players age for contract legnth. The only reason a team signs a player past the age of 40 is to circumvent caps since they'd probably be retiring around that time. If a player feels that they can continue to produce, they can sign 1 year extensions.

Loved these suggestions a fan on ESPN comments page put forth, definitely worthwhile changes, gives the owners a little, without going overboard and without fucking over the current players. Players of all sports though should never, EVER take less than 50%, I'm not even cool with 50/50, but NHL owners have to realize in the future they're not going to keep negotiating them down every single CBA. Eventually, such as THIS CBA, they're going to hit the 50/50 threshold and have to stop.
