Why pick a player as a captain who has absolutely no business in the top 6 forwards of the team, especially a team like the Oil?

    Hah...Weber to Philly eh?

They must really want the cup within a year or two and not care afterwards.

Edit: Oh God, I hope he goes to Philly. Just looking at their contracts is hilarious -- Grossmann, Schenn, and Coburn until 2016, and Pronger until 2017. If they lock up Weber, that's a LOT of money just in defensemen. Add Bryz to the mix... yeah.

I would be surprised if Poile does not match this contract. He's a very smart/capable GM. He understands what losing Weber would mean to the team and to the team's standing in the city. Yes Philly has forced his hand. But there's nothing that says he can't sign Weber and then trade him afterwards. But there's no way Poile lets his second star defenseman walk away without getting anything in return. Puck Daddy states if Nashville doesn't match they would get 4 of Philly's 1st round picks as compensation. Figure with how far they will most likely go in the playoffs each of those picks probably won't be below #25. Not worth the loss of Weber. Poile will match.

I'd rather have four first-round picks than any player in the league other than Stamkos and maybe Crosby. Even if those picks are in the late teens or 20s. And Philly isn't a lock to be good for four years -- they lost Jagr, Briere will be 35 soon, Pronger might not play, Bryz is a nutcase, Hartnell's an unrestricted free agent next summer, etc. There's a lot of pressure on Schenn, Simmonds, Couturier, Voracek, and Read to be that next group of guys, but who knows? If the Flyers get bad, those picks will only go up in value.

That said, I do think Poile will match. You can't lose Suter and Weber in the same off-season, it wrecks your legitimacy with your team and your fans.

There are always buyers, and many teams would love to be able to do what Philly is trying to do now, sell the future for a Cup now. Even more so since they will probably be fine (although not in a fun position) in a few years time.
Barring no sophmore setbacks for the latter 3 (courtourier, read, schenn), I feel very confident with those numbers.

Claude Giroux, as much as it pains me to say it as a Pens fan, is better than Zach Parise and if I had to pick a #5 to put behind 87/71/AO/Stamkos, Giroux is the person I'd be weighing against Datsyuk. Claude Giroux deserves and will likely get an AAV of around 8.

Courtourier is a 19 year old sophmore this coming season, but his upside is so ridiculously through the roof; he makes Jeff Skinner look worthless. He's been asked for by Columbus for Nash and Philly has sternly said, 'No fucking chance.'

Schenn and Read could play themselves down from my estimates. Schenn hasn't played a full season in the NHL yet (joined midway this year just before the Winter Classic) but has massive potential too - he was the #1 prospect not playing in the NHL 2 years in a row so for Schenn. Matt Read has proven himself to be a solid 200 foot player, but I could see his production dropping off a little and him moving down to the 4 mil mark.

The details on Weber's offer sheet are crazy. He gets something like 56 mil in the first 4 years. I don't think the Preds are going to match.

It's legal based on the compromise between the NHL and the union after Kovalchuk's contract was rejected. However, it will make CBA negotiations that much more terrible.

Whether Nashville matches or not, I hope they dick over the Flyers the next several years by giving their young guys big offer sheets.

Thats pretty much whats going to happen. Its one of those unwritten rules with GMs, you do not give offer sheets out because they will come back to bite you in the ass. Its even dumber the Flyers did it since they have a lot of young good players hitting RFA the next year or 2.

Like Richy pointed out, the Oilers might get some of that back lash when their young players hit RFA but they have a different GM now so maybe they won't.

If it wasn't for it being so front loaded, Preds match for sure, but thats why the Flyers did that, hoping the Preds won'[t want to put out that much cash up front.

Either way, this is bad for the NHL overall because its going to bring front loading to the fore front and the NHL is likely going to want to limit the amount you can give out as a bonus.

Some good ol Bryzgalov sound bites on Yahoo:

Did you hear about the conditions the NHL and club owners proposed in the new negotiations? To cut player share of the revenues from 57 to 46%, cut the maximum term of contracts to 5 years, get rid of signing bonuses… Your reaction?

"That's some impudence. I would only answer for myself — this variant is not acceptable. But maybe one of the players will be happy [and say] 'Wow! Great terms!'"
How did you feel about Jaromir Jagr leaving Philadelphia?

"Nothing at all. He left, so be it. He's a kind, open person, of course. We had a great relationship. But what can I do? Call Jaromir and yell 'What have you done? Come back, I will forgive everything!'?"
Have you tried beer called 'Crosby's Tears?'

"I don't drink alcohol at all. But I understand what you're talking about. This beer was put on the market after Philadelphia beat Pittsburgh in the first round of the Stanley Cup. Yes, people in our city don't like Crosby very much. But the feelings towards Evgeni Malkin are very different."

Because of the perception Crosby used to asking for penalties?

"Maybe. I haven't figured it out in one season. But in Philadelphia no one paints Malkin as a ballerina like what happened to Crosby in the playoffs. Evgeni is depicted as a Russian bear."
And for the end, his kids are into the universe shows too:

Do your children ask you what the Universe is made of?

"They are very interested in it. They watch programs about history and nature. And Vladik [Bryzgalov's son] recently asked what black holes are made of. I told him. Now, my six-year-old son draws them and tells that they have a very strong gravitation. My kids also know all planets of the solar system."

Apparently they have been trying to make a trade for awhile but Nashville has been asking for way to much so the Flyers said fuck it. Nashville will have to pay Weber $27 million in one calendar year before they are even allowed to trade him

Just a few that come around during the playoffs. Penthiselea or whatever, can never spell his name right. Makaveli and Abrasax back a couple seasons ago until Sep scared them away.
