Wait. People actually consider Mass Effect a RPG? It is, and it's always been, a FPS. Plain and simple. Every game nowdays has "RPG elements", but that doesn't mean that they're all RPGs.
In before "RPG means story!" vs. "RPG means leveling!"
You mean third person shooter? And nobody ever considered it an RPG, it's just that the RPG elements that people actually liked from 1 have been phased out over the course of 2 and 3. The story also went to shit in 2 and 3, and on top of that they're not even that good of a third person shooter.
So take away the parts that a lot of people liked from a mediocre game and you're left with a shit game because those parts pushed the game into the threshold of "acceptable".
Personally I thought FXII had a great story, it just wasn't character driven like every other JRPG. Whole thing was about politics between waring nations and the repercussions thereafter. Very refreshing imo... I'll definitely agree it's characters were very bland and forgettable though. Especially the villains.
If we're talking hyped in my own brain it would have to be Chrono Cross. Dont get me wrong it was a good game, but I think giving any game a Chrono name is probably going to doom it to false hopes and not measuring up. Should have been called Radical Dreamers 2 for lulz.
Media hype is obviously Spore. Then probably MvC3... (Again probably false hopes and not measuring up though)
Whoa whoa whoa the game was good, but it certainly wasnt Chrono Trigger good. They for some reason traded insane character development for 2 cent characters a plenty! I didnt exactly care as much about Poshul as I did about Robo!
Plus the battle system was wonky for me, but thats just because I prefer basic normal boring menu system.
Also that first Opassa beach area, did that make you crave Froot Loops too or...
I'll give you Trigger was a step above Cross, but only a step. Comparing what is almost a masterpiece is never really too fair to sequels though. I think Cross stood very well on its own. And yeah the 44 character thing wasn't that great, but a few characters still managed to stand out very well. I may be biased though because Chrono Cross was my first psx rpg love.
Wait, scratch that. Final Fantasy 8 was my biggest let-down.
FF8 wasn't the best, but how in the hell is it your biggest letdown ever in gaming? There are a shit ton worse upsets.
People either love 8 or hate it. But here we go with another thread devolving into FF fest!
Sorry, I meant, "wasn't the best" **
Xenogears o.O
Alright, I'll give you that.
Haven't seen anyone mention this, but holy fuck.
