    Doom 3...

Doom & Doom 2 were absolutely amazing games that came along at a time when gaming was still looked at as an obscure and borderline childish thing to do... in a lot of ways they revolutionized the video game as a legitimate form of entertainment and brought them into popular culture. Along with being the first FPS's (with the exception of Wolfenstein), they were simply just fucking badass games. The hype for Doom 3 all those years later was huge... and it just fell flat.

I don't even think I spent as much time playing Doom 3 as I spent designing levels for Doom 2 mods, let alone playing them or the original game itself. Hell, I can still remember the layout of my various level "masterpieces", even though the floppy discs are long since biodegraded in a landfill somewhere.

Cosigning sfxt, even bought into the hype for the first couple weeks, but that game is the anti hype.

Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 (mostly due to how shitty Battle.net 2.0 is)
    Unreal Tournament 3 [2007]
    Aion
    World of Warcraft: Cataclysm
    Xenosaga
Mario Kart 7 (capable of having so many more features)
    Metroid: Other M

    Probably more

X4 was pretty good, although it has some pretty bad voice acting that Capcom decided to carry over in DMC1

I was not impressed with it, but at least I got it for free a year or so ago when they did the update to the game to hype 2 which I haven't played yet, and probably wont cause it seems like its more of the same shit but with different backdrops for the locations.

Spore, definitely. I loved the beginning and then once the RTS was over I was angry. Was also angry when I realized I could swap out body parts at any evolutionary stage (go from a two legged vicious animal to a twenty legged herbivore)

Age of Conan was a huge letdown for me - I was looking for an excuse to quit FFXI, but alas...

And as if I didn't learn from AoC...

Warhammer: Age of Reckoning - it wasn't as disappointing as AoC but I got to T4 rather quickly and had nothing to do because no one was raiding. Rerolled as a Bright Wizard and had a lot of fun when I discovered there were low level NMs that dropped some decent loot, but never made it to T4. Eventually quit and went back to FFXI

Yeah, I didn't ever play XII when it came out and it was probably in the same place for me that portal was for you. It's not that they're bad games, but it seems like people can just cream their pants over a game and build it up too much for people like us that never played it when it came out.

The worst part about that part is how easy it is to get by. Took me forever but all you gotta do is hold down and up repeatedly to move the barrel (no jumping required) I KNOW RIGHT? THE RAAAAAAAAAAAGE
Yeah the rage finding this out maybe 6-8 years later was extreme. Considering how no other barrel needed such a mechanic (trick?) in the stage, it does come off as a dick move.

For Street fighter x Tekken, I never played it, but what I got from the preview videos I saw was that the game, I made the following observation which I explained to my friend why I wasn't so hyped over it:
and did you notice that SF chars have less juggle ability than the showcased Tekken dudes

but swap it around the SF chars seem to have "stronger" juggles (they look like medium/high punches) in comparison to the "poking" juggles of the Tekken
That's all I saw/noticed (based on the trailer which explained the system with some kickass music), outside of the "omg wow" features such as tagging/team combo/shit (that we've all seen in MvC)

If people really wanted to see Tekken chars fight SF chars, I could've recreated it in MUGEN if i wanted to, but my Tekken knowledge is limited but if I recall correctly there is no 2D Tekken game? (MUGEN excels at 2D sprites, not 3D models).

Was Mortal Kombat vs DC mentioned yet? I remember another friend hyping to me about it (not too interested in either of them personally) and then when it came out he never mentioned it again.

    I'll throw another one down:

    Dungeon Keeper 2

Sticking to just off the top of my head:

    FFXIV
    Dead Island
    Duke Forever

I always try to avoid buying into any hype whatsoever, just because it always seems to end poorly, but damned if those three didn't still get me somehow. I blame myself for trying to overlook the red flags on XIV and Duke.

I was such a huge Tomb Raider fan back in the PS1 era, and I remember trawling the web for countless hours over the course of Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness's insanely long development and getting enormously excited by every article, trailer and interview I was able to find. Then it came out and almost destroyed the franchise because it was so fucking awful in every single respect. Ever since then I've been very cautious about buying into hype.
