I honestly had high hopes for it and actually enjoyed it for the first couple hours, but the execution wasn't that great. It reminded me of that movie Cube, but without the characters lol

Its funny people say Portal when it got no hype at all coming out. Unless people mean after it came out.

Isn't that what the entire game is about, even on PC?
Oh yeah and dragons, though they stop being fun and challenging after the first time you fight one.

The most hyped game I fell prey to was probably XIII, but that's my fault because I really didn't buy into any hype, I just bought it because it was a new FF. Played the shit out of it until Gran Pulse and just lost 100% interest.
Worst game overall, hype or not, was Cities XL. I was weakened from a lack of being able to play simcity 4 on my new rig, and needed a sim, so I caved. Shitty game is shitty. Thank God I bought it on discount, but still paid like 20 bucks for that trash.

Not counting XIV because I wasn't buying into hype, I just hoped that they'd do what a decent company does and make fixes based on user-feedback in the alpha/beta stage.

This is hilarious, but I love SF X T, despite all of its flaws. I get pissed when I can't find a stream for it online to watch at night. Wish it was better (IE. finished/balanced), but I love the idea, and seeing Asuka's thighs on a SF engine makes me happy in various areas.

@Hiroki: I agree with you about BoF4. Shit needs a sequel. We really didn't solve anything. We "saved" the world, but all that means is that we ensured its existence. The same amount of corruption that was going on beforehand is still going on. There was absolutely no closure, and Fou-Lu wasn't even a true "villain" anyway, as he had some pretty damned valid points. I would have loved to see a sequel or some sort of spin-off where you just played as a Punisher Fou-Lu and "cleansed" the world of corrpution.

This is what I'm thinking. The internet kinda 'ruined' the game very shortly after its release. All there was prior was a couple of those 2d Aperture Science videos, and one gameplay footage iirc.

The fact that the original ending(until the 'expansion' that came out)was so open ended and didn't resolve one of the major villains was a giant kick to the nuts. And the whole "oh you didn't get the unlock the evil sword from before? Well we have a sword of equivalent power under the castle. I guess I forgot to mention this to you before when you might have needed it, oh well." I still played Fable 1 2-3 times though, cause the game actually had enough variety in spells that you could go pure melee or pure ranger but you would still invest in magic because of all the enhancements there made it worthwhile and viable.

    @ portal question

What I think should have been discussed or separated in this thread in the first place should have been hype in general (from friends, forums, etc.) or pre-release hype (from gaming press, beta testers). For probably a lot of people in this thread referring to games that they played a while after the game came out (for me, XII for example) the game was primarily only talked about by people who really enjoyed it. Hearing IGN say "GOTY" and hearing some people in BG's gaming section say "GOTY" can produce quite dissimilar expectations.

Also, Fable II. Loved Fable (never got into the hype, just bought it and enjoyed it), but not so much II.

Hype is an odd term to gauge anything by anyhow. It'd probably be more appropriate to just call them gaming let-downs, since it seems like that's what a lot of these are.

Yeah, and in all honesty, I think the slightly more serious gamer (loosely meaning non-farmville/brobox gamers, don't kill me) base is getting, on average, older, and while we can get just as excited about ("dependent on" might be more accurate) upcoming releases, we've become these jaded fuckers that are getting harder and harder to please.

Yeah, they were real slick with that demo, too. Made it like some epic next-gen hollywood blockbuster shit lol Then you start playing it and find out it was all botox and fisher-price difficulty. It goes down as the first game I'd ever accidentally beaten lmao

I'm gonna add that FPS game for the PS3 that was supposed to have "hundreds" of players fighting at once, it was supposed to be some super-strategic tactical shooter. I forgot the name, but that was one of the more recent outlandish ideas that never lived up to it's promises.

Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 (and probably 3)

1 was fantastic. I played the shit out of that. Was entertaining.

2 was ... 1 again repackaged. Got bored pretty quick.

3 it became all 3D and I wasn't even interested.

my roommate had it, i played around with it a bit. wasn't terrible, but i seem to remember the 'large-scale' battles with 64-128+ people were just broken down into smaller groups of like 8v8 or something like that, so their main selling point was a bit misleading.

FFX as well. I fucking hate linear games and no overworld made me sad. Some of the VA's irked me as well. I started playing XII and lost interest and then I played XII IZJS and was like JESUS CHRIST THIS SHIT IS AWESOME. Sooo fucking good, didn't like XII but loved IZJS version. Put so many hours into it. I wish they would do more monster hunting sidequests in their FF games.

Portal didn't have a hype machine surrounding its release, it was just a quirky little puzzle game they threw in The Orange Box and pretty much only mentioned when interviewed about it. The Orange Box was sold on HL2 Ep.2 and on TF2, which had an ad campaign on TV and in movie theaters.

Nothing could live up to the obnoxious level of fan hype for that series, though.

Thinking I should rename this to "Your most disappointing game" because most titles weren't hyped up as much.

I just assumed "hype" was referring to how hyped you personally were for the game. I mean, who really gives a shit what other people think about your games?
