I suppose the superior book version being that he just 'cheated' in a simulated nighttime exercise by turning off his infrared view to see in daylight and eyeball his simulated firing of a shoulder-launched nuclear weapon such that it would have resulted in the death of a fellow wouldn't have been as impactual in movie form. Paul Verhoeven is still on my 'People to Punch in the Face' list for adapting a book he didn't even read.

Also, in the book, 'live fire' still only meant one bullet in fifty wasn't a blank, but the threat was to drop it to one in ten if the exercises weren't taken seriously. Putting your recruits into a situation of likely harm by having full live-fire in training is just astoundingly retarded even in a Verhoeven flavor satire.
