Okay, this'll be my last one of these; Just some last impressions and more reiteration.

I had a few friends over yesterday and we played this game for about 6 hours.

None of us were able to get a ring out on anyone, so I'm starting to think it's impossible to get a ring out on anyone aside from a person standing exactly still for some reason.

Aside from assists eating Ultimate Jutsus, no one's assists were killed except once and that was because of a mechanic we didn't fully understand at the time. When you're thrown in the air by an opponent's combo, on that very last hit you get a prompt that allows you to have your assist eat the last hit. Doing so eats 3life bars off your assist. After we realized that, no one used that ever again since Substitution is the better and even if you don't have any substitutes, its often better to just eat the last hit.

Everyone was pretty bummed about the character roster. Especially the lack of the people who were so heavily advertised as being in the game.

The new awakening is pretty unbalanced. You can turn on your awakening at anytime, use the Awakening Jutsu then turn it off immediately after. You can repeat this over and over, never taking the negative toll that the awakening is supposed to bring. It makes it even more broken with certain characters. I'd say you should expect most people in ranked matches to be Neji, because when he uses his awakening, every time he hits the opponent, their max chakra bar goes down temporarily, so that tactic seems to be- Immediately awaken, land some combos to shorten opponent's chakra to nearly nothing then exit awakening. Rinse and repeat.
Characters who awaken with low HP seems to get the short end of the stick.

Tournament Mode added a fun mode. You can have it so two random rules will be active during the fight. Rules such as; Chakra constantly drains, you lose all your chakra if you fall to the ground, no substitutions, grabs do more damage, landing an Ultimate Jutsu instant kills opponent, assist gauge fills faster etc... while it's fun for a short time, it's not as fun as it could be since it seems to be only useable in tournament mode and you can't choose what effects you get.

Then I showed off some MGR: Revengeance and I'm pretty sure I sold some copies of that game.

Ring outs happen when you get sent flying by a jutsu into a wall that can be broken. The first time, the wall will crack, even if its not actually a wall, but just the border of a stage. The second time someone flies into that crack, its a ring out.

yeah, I'm aware how it works, I just don't see how anyone can actually have it happen to them. All the hours of this game I've played, I've only seen the barrier crack twice.

I see it a lot on online vs. matches, but with so many KnJ flying around, unless someone chooses to finish their strings on a cornered opponents with no chakra (pointless when you can cancel combo and knock out a full health bar in the process), you aren't gonna see too many.

Just chalk it up to yet another gameplay inclusion that doesn't get used because of how the community plays.

Did NA even get any of the other DLC aside from goku?
And why the hell did they give Naruto all those costumes? Not that I would buy them even if you could use them for any and all characters

For many gamers, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 is what is commonly referred to as a "story game". It is a title you play primarily for the single-player, cinematic experience, but that’s not all the game has to offer. Outside of Adventure mode, Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 is also a VS fighting game. One that’s even played in tournaments.

The community over at Arashiboards put together a handy tier list, in case you’re wondering which characters are more viable in the competitive metagame. Which is certainly handy given that there are a grand total of 80 ninjas and samurai (and ninjas cosplaying as samurais) to choose from.

With such a robust playable cast, one has to wonder: does developer CyberConnect2 even have time to spend on fine-tuning character balance?

The answer, as it turns out, is yes.

CyberConnect2 president Hiroshi Matsuyama tells Siliconera at the sidelines of a recent Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 promotional event in Tokyo, tweaking character parameters was pretty much a necessity during the development process; the team could not get lazy and just leave characters from Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations ported over into Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 as is – even if they wanted to.

"In Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 we’ve refreshed the game’s battle system quite a bit from the previous installment (Generations), and so it was necessary to tweak every single character from Generations to conform to the new system. So yes, in Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 we’ve actually looked over and tweaked every character’s parameters for game balance," he explained.

Having said that, When you talk about characters who are strong in the world of Naruto, naturally somebody like Madara Uchiha would come to mind, right?"

"So, on top and beyond of character balance, what we needed to do was also to ensure that characters who appear to be strong in the original manga and anime series, should ideally feel like a strong contender in the game," said Matsuyama.

CyberConnect2′s approach to character balance here is slightly different from what gamers are used to in a conventional fighting game, sure. But it’s not exactly an unreasonable one, given that the vast majority of the Naruto fanbase are not likely to be fighting game fanatics. Interestingly, the "tilt" factor that some of the anime series’ most fearsome ninjas receive is apparently limited only to when he or she is made the main fighter on a team – this balance philosophy does not apply to characters while in support roles.

In Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, players pick not just a single ninja, but a team comprising a main fighter and up to two support characters from the cast of 80. You do not control support characters directly in the course of a match. Instead, they are summoned every now and then to perform assist attacks alongside your main fighter. These assist attacks, Matsuyama said, are balanced based primarily on feedback gathered from players all over the world.

This was something the development team had taken to heart after Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2′s release back in 2010, when they noticed that characters like Hidan were often the go-to characters for assists. In order to prevent users from relying on the same assists too much, they’ve been making changes to assists based on player feedback from UNS2 to UNS Generations, and now from Generations to UNS3.

"So of course, we do implement deeper gameplay mechanics that we think fighting game fans will be able to pick up on and play at a tournament level with. However, when we set out to make this game, the premise for us was that we’re primarily making a game for fans of the Naruto manga and anime series. And so [accessibility for] those fans do take precedence, when it comes to who we’re gearing this title towards," Matsuyama concluded.

Good to see the devs getting a little credit for doing more than making a straight port. This game's combat is far more fleshed out than the previous versions; cancels and insta-jutsu have fleshed out the game as much as Budokai Tenkaichi 3's cancels did for it. Amazing how well the two games parallel one another.

Hell no am I going to rebuy this game.
Even if it was just DLC I think I'd pass.
1 new character and 38 alt costumes which for the most part just look retarded?
And from what I could tell, the majority of the "enchanced and revamped cinematics," all they did was add dust and smoke and fog to hide their cinematics.

    Press release:

Franchise debut on PC brings tons of Ninja-powered enhancements to highly acclaimed title, with new retail pack and DLC coming for console players

It’s a red letter day for Naruto fans as Namco Bandai Games Europe announces the official debut of the explosive franchise on PC with Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst heading to the platform this winter 2013. The enhanced edition of the acclaimed title will also be available at retail for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, while existing owners of the console game will be able to download the new content as a DLC pack.

Originally released in March 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to wide critical and fan acclaim, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 has been given a thorough overhaul for its PC debut and console come back. Not least among the wealth of enhancements is the addition of the much anticipated chapter in which Sasuke and Itachi take on Kabuto in a nail-biting confrontation.

“We’re very excited to be bringing the incredible Naruto franchise to PC for the first time, while also bringing extra content to existing console fans of course,” said Olivier Comte, Senior Vice President, Namco Bandai Games Europe. “The Naruto games series goes from strength to strength, so it’s only right that we should let even more players enjoy it with this PC release.”

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst includes the following additional features

Additional Chapter: Finally free of Kabuto’s control, Itachi intends to crack the Reanimation forbidden jutsu. Will an unprecedented Uchiha alliance with Sasuke be enough to handle it?

New playable Character: Kabuto reaches the almighty Sage mode and is now playable in versus mode. Unleash his power and defeat your opponents both offline and online.

Director’s Cut Edition: Discover completely revamped Storm 3 cinematics and experience more intensely than ever the epic conflict consuming the entire ninja world.

100 New Missions: Embark on a whole new series of missions, many with their own uniquely challenging objectives.

38 Additional Costumes: Outfit characters in a selection of 38 costumes from the Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 DLC packs.

At least they're offering it as DLC for existing copies I suppose. Dunno if it's worth buying either way though.

I've been avoiding Naruto games ever since Ninja Storm 1, but I think I'll pick this one up just to give it a shot. Might as well wait for the Super Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Turbo Edition though.
