Thread was always about eating food out of dumpsters, something that most people think should only be done by people who have no other choice.

Oh, well if most people think that, surely they must be right, and have a great reason for thinking that.

DC is Hollywood for ugly people. Lobbyists, bureaucrats, members of Congress, defense contractors... lots of people here with disposable income to burn.

I just found this thread and holy fucking shit I just lost all of my faith in humanity. Only read the first two pages and the last two but wow... Some of these comments make me cringe.

You're clearly not lazy if you're doing this, because you're driving all over town looking for free shit, so go get yourself a goddamn job and buy food like everybody else. Seriously. It's not hard. The problem isn't that places aren't hiring it's that too many people won't work. I know tons of managers and owners who constantly tell me that it's nearly impossible to find a good employee these days.

    Also:

I had to bring her to the side and explain that even if she didn't want it, she never stopped to think I might have wanted a double fister and made her go back and second-thought the guy a can.
Way to be a fucking greedy wasteful leech.

That being said, I have no problem with getting furniture off of someone's yard or (I guess) trash can when its on the street or whatever, that's perfectly normal. But the rest of this, routinely going behind certain stores looking to snatch up free shit, is just insane. Especially the guy on page 1-2 who mentioned stealing $2,000 worth of copper from a job where they were renovating like it was perfectly normal. That is stealing, by the way.

It really irks me when people come into a thread and openly admit they did not read the thread and just skimmed 1 or 2 pages of it and then rehash something that was discussed at length and all the facts came out. In the middle of the thread it was hashed out that taking stuff from the trash (assuming the copper was in the trash ready to go to the dump) is not universally stealing. It depends on where you live and it also depends on what the circumstances are. If the dumpster is not locked up then once it is in the trash it isn't considered stealing anymore. (Paraphrasing what several others said so they can chime in with more accurate information)

I have worked construction jobs many times where thousands of dollars of scrap copper was put into dumpsters destined for the dump because they don't want to take the time and effort to sort it out and take it to the recycle center. If someone wants to sort it out and then cut the plastic jackets off the copper then they can benefit financially in a big way since copper is so valuable right now but that doesn't change the fact that it was probably getting thrown out by the company they work for and if they were throwing it out then chances are pretty good that the person who took it wasn't stealing.

I think this thread has beaten a dead horse into a pulp and thrown it away in a dumpster for being over beaten, taken by a dumpster diver looking for a free horse and re purposed as garden fertilizer.

He said they replaced all the copper fittings with PVC and found excess copper lying in the floor at the building they were working in. It wasn't in a dumpster. That's stealing.

When someone pays you to come do work (renovating) which I assume was the case here, you don't just stick random shit in your pockets before you leave. Come on.

I, too, am confused why society thinks people rummaging through garbage and eating it is strange.

Actually thread was about saving money on free shit, People like you turned it into "lol poor people slummin it while us rich peeps make our 6 figures and turn up our noses to free shit".

Like people have said, myself a few times, you arnt eating shit right out of the dumpster (you can with very certain things) but instead taking it home and cooking the produce and shit down into something and using all that shit that is still good. Tomatoes can be turned into sauces or sliced up for salads and shit, bread can be blended down even if it's stale to make bread crumbs, or you can fucking dice that shit up and make homemade croutons. There are tons of things you can do to save money doing this sort of thing instead of just going out and buying it from the supermarket because "well I have a paycheck, why not use it".

I mean shit, even if you're making 6 figures, why not do this? And dont tell me its because you're "above" it. I'm sure you bitches have eaten fast food more then once, or done far worse to tarnish you're vastly superior "dignity".

I'm sure those same managers are not looking for super overqualified employees or something. Get off you're mother fucking high horse. I have a job, it's slow going right now due to the economy (not many people have cash to do home repairs) and I go full time to college and do random shit to bring in money like computer repair, that doesn't mean you can't do this shit. Hell it takes all of an hour to drive out to Trader Joes and the other spots and then come home. A single hour, that's it.

Yeah it's amazing how many places just throw out all this copper when they start using pvc and shit. Can make so much cash off it if you get lucky and find it at the right time.

And yeah the thread is pretty much beaten to death with people who come in here talking about how "You eat garbage lol get job so no eat garbage food"

I wish this thread had gone in the direction of why are societies so wasteful and how do we stop perfectly good food from going to the dumpster. What can we do to stop frivolous lawsuits so that food that is "unacceptable" to sell in a supermarket but still perfectly good can be donated instead of going straight into the trash. Why is it ok for us to throw out so much edible food when there are people who would be more than happy to have that food (even if you take out the idea of transporting it due to costs).

My neighbor is the district manager of at least 6 Wal-Mart stores in this area and he has told me each store is looking for between 10 and 20 employees to work full time or replace or fill in for people who won't take more hours or just need to be replaced. I also know someone who owns at least four Wendy's and he's told me all the same thing. No one wants to show up and work 6-8 hours a day anymore. Hell, *I* would hire another person or two right now if I could find someone to show up on time and work. Admittedly those positions require some qualifications. You have to be able to communicate on the phone with customers effectively, for example.

It's not the dumpster diving itself that bothers me as much as the mentality that some of you have going along with it. The freeloader mentality and that you're entitled just to go around and take shit that you want for free. If everyone thought like that, all the fucking stores would go out of business and then no one would have dumpsters to dive into anyway. Good thing some of us bring our food out of the front door of the supermarket and not the back though. Save this kind of behavior for the people who are really bad off, can't find a job due to diseases or physical issues, drug addiction and so on and have no other choice. You're not saving the world by taking a few carrots and apples out of the dumpster.

    First world problems.

Yes, we should be sending that food to people who need it or overseas but that's not as logistically simple as SAYING THAT makes it sound. If you really want to be helpful, go do your dumpster diving shit and then drop off all the cans you find at a local church or similar venue where they're giving the food to people who need it, not just greedy leeches who think it's cool and environmentally conscious to save 20 cents on a pack of ramen noodles by rummaging through the trash behind Costco. Oh wait, not even food drives, churches and soup kitchens will accept food that's out of date. I forgot.

You really do have MAJOR reading comprehension issues don't you? At the end of the snippet that you quoted I state that the US has so many people going hungry, homeless, unable to feed their kids. I state it is logistically impossible to ship the food anywhere not only that but it is cost prohibitive. Pay attention before you comment, it really does get tiring.

Also it was discussed briefly in the thread earlier (which I guess you wouldn't know since you didn't read it) that soup kitchens, churches, and food banks won't accept out of date food not because there is anything wrong with it but because they are afraid of getting slapped with a frivolous lawsuit. If we could do away with stupid lawsuits and people paid closer attention to what they ate and didn't eat food that was actually bad then they might be willing to use food that grocery stores were getting rid of because they couldn't sell it. Oh wait I said that in the part you quoted too but you seemed to have missed that sentence as well.

Funny that you mention that because that is actually a big part of the solution in a sense. On that food network show where they talk about the massive amount of food waste a big issue they showcase is how overly sensitive and picky people have become to having their food be perfect, homogenious, and exactly the color they expect every time. It has led to a prevalence of artificial food coloring's in places where it might not be necessary. It also leads to a lot of vegetable and fruit waste because people will avoid anything with a tiny bruise or black mark or any sort of color variation in its skin and that leads to waste. People have an unrealistic expectation of what non processed foods should look like and won't touch anything that is slightly different, like a carrot that is shaped differently than what they expect a carrot to be shaped like.

If people changed their expectations of fresh produce then a lot of waste could be avoided.

I work 12-hour shifts, bring homemade stuff and leftovers to the office, reuse, reduce, recycle, etc.

Also, working those shifts allows me to exchange money for goods and services. Win-win.
