I don't see FFXI changing to FTP, nor would I care to see such a change. If your main concern is gaining new players then extend the free trial for brand new accounts to 6 months or even a year. That's long enough for potential newcomers to become attached to Vana'diel and their character. If it wasn't then they weren't going to stick around anyways.
