Mavs weren't going to repeat in a lockout season against young teams like OKC/Heat, and Chandler wasn't worth 15m/year.

This extended period of success (12 years of 50+ win seasons) with Dirk as the sole All-Star caliber player isn't going to last forever, they had to try something to get a player better than Dirk going forward and let him ease into his post-prime.

So they made the decision to set themselves up for this summer, at the time CP3/Dwight/D-Will were all available. They gambled and lost, but it's better than signing a bunch of bad contracts and locking yourself into a terrible roster for the next 4 years.

Go big or go broke, being 4-8th seed and 1st or 2nd round exit doesn't help you in this league. Instead they will fill out the roster with 1 year deals and go hard for Dwight and/or CP3 next summer, if that fails then it's time to go broke and bottom out like OKC.
