Modern execution with the spirit of the originals.
This was just great.
From an objective standpoint, it's poor. However, objectivity can go get fucked in this instance.
I kind of really want a L5R film now though.
Shit was sick with it. If you go in there knowing your watching a homage to kung fu flicks then you won't be disappointed.
Objectively, I thought the only thing that fell short was the performances; the dialogue was stilted and the deliveries felt like caricatures... but I pity the intelligence of anyone that didn't see that coming.
The RZA is simply not an actor, but again, we should all have been aware of this. For what it was the guy what played Silver Lion was probably the best performance, for no other reason than being flamboyantly over-the-top in his delivery. Lucy Liu was great in her subtlety.
Acting aside--the pacing, action, narration (which thankfully only served to catch up the viewer and was ended when no longer needed), the editing (from first impressions), and especially the scoring, were all great.
Watched this earlier tonight, it was good. Not the best IMO, but it's a little bit above pop corn fun.
Spoiler about Rza final attack.
Spoiler: show
I am now eagerly awaiting the gif.
I plan to check this out on dvd. Regarding the RZA, I really liked his parts in American Gangster, but those were short scenes. I was hoping people would have big things to say about Batista.
Really, what else can be said about Dave Batista? He's a hulking professional wrestler that plays a hulking martial artist/mercenary.
He's pretty much like every other pro wrestler that's appeared in a movie, discounting The Rock. He's there to smash shit, that's about it.
The RZA showed some action chops, I felt... but had the emotional range of molded clay.
But, let me re-iterate that I fucking loved this movie. It wasn't really designed for moving dramatic performances, this wasn't A Beautiful Mind. His acting aside, The RZA co-wrote, directed, and stared in this project, and turned out a good fuckin' film.
Saw this shit last night
Rated R
At least an hour's worth of scenes set in a whorehouse
Not one single titty
Movie loses points for that. RZA is about as dynamic an actor as Kristen Stewart. Rest of the cast was pretty hype. Direction was RZA, writing was RZA, so below average. Fights were amazing and the villains were right out of other kung fu movies.
Not bad.
Rza wrote a movie to cast himself as the lead role. Then cast Jamie Chung as the girl he gets to make out with.
Rza is a fucking genius if you ask me.
P.S. Movie was pretty damn good too.
I was thoroughly entertained by this movie. Read somewhere afterward that the original cut was like 2:40, but Eli Roth managed to talk him into cutting it down. Curious what the extra stuff is, like maybe more background since the beginning of the movie seemed kind of choppy with a lot of information being thrown at us.
