I went into this w/ no prior experience, I've not seen Gundam or the like, I did love the movie Robot Jox (it was good, fuck you) when I was a kid though. I went to see Guillermo del Toro work his magic on some Robots vs. Monsters shit and he did it. Beyond that though, the story held water and the characters were interesting. Going to refrain from too much critique cause I really did enjoy it and poking holes won't change that.
    Spoiler: show
The evolutionary factor of the monsters was real cool, Fish > Reptile > Bird > Mammal > WTF? Aaaand Charlie Day doing his best Rick Moranis circa Ghostbusters impression was great, was subtle but apparent in a couple scenes. Jax whooping Warlow's ass was a good time as well. Ron Pearlman was an after thought but I'd say any possible sequels will hinge on his character. Not saying there should be but... if it's a hit, fuck it, bring em on.
Very much recommended, I saw it in the RealD 3D, no complaints about the visuals.

Saw it last night and loved it. The action sequences were fun and exciting. It did a good enough job at setting the story up quickly and in an entertaining fashion. I personally really enjoyed the funny moments in the movie and the easter eggs thrown in both the obvious and subtle ones. Oh also it looked fantastic. I hope this does well, if only to help other fun/passion project/movies by good directors get made. Also if you're going to see it make sure to stay for a few minutes into the credits, there is a scene before the final credits start.

/m/ is all over this flick now- something like 4-5 threads up at once. Generally, the reviews are positive, with any seriously negative stuff being jumped on by a gang of pissed-off anons.

Basically, do you like giant robots? Do you like giant monsters? If the answer to either is yes, watch this. The only real shame is that I'd really, really have liked to have seen more of some of the Jaeger designs, flashbacks included. Do watch the post-credits stuff, both for the bonus endscene and the shoutout to two people who deserved it.

    Just got back from it.
    Spoiler: show
Biggest complaint was that the action scenes were so good, I wish there were more. I understand they needed to have a plot, but man, I would have been ok with a 2 hour movie of Jaegers battling Kaiju. Agree with those who say it would have made for an amazing miniseries or something. The two "extra" Jaegers went down too quickly. Wished they could have survived and been involved in some amazing fights.

I have a few legitimate complaints, biggest one probably being the predictability of the ending -- it would have felt more powerful if Raleigh didn't make it out of his Jaeger and had to go down with it. Also Charlie Day's character.. but I don't like him so that might have biased me a little.. Overall though, was a great movie that I really enjoyed.

    Movie was amazing.

Serra is right. Just that one thing holding it back from masterpiece status

    Spoiler: show
I bet Raleigh dying was part of the original script

Amazing movie, actions scenes were great. Acting was a little weak, except for Charlie Day and of course Big Ron. Was a refreshing movie after all these shitty remakes coming out. Id pay to see it again.

OMG OMG. IMAX 3D for this movie was so worth it. ILM did an amazing job as always... I was so surprised cause I was expecting the movie to be really dark all around, but they had incredibly beautiful scenes with brilliant colors. Definitely a nod to anime.

Wanted to see this so bad today but I didn't have time. There is only one other showing in my area tonight and it's really late. It's a good thing I didn't maybe cause I was just going to see it in 2D but some of the comments here have sold me on giving the IMAX 3D a try. Gundam and mecha fan here btw.

Just came from the movies and it was pretty fucking sick. The 3D effect enhanced the experience, it was really neat. My only complaint is that 1. it felt too short, and 2. I wasn't able to get my hands on one of those posters from the MGS/ZoE artist. I had a chat w/ a super visor or w/e and gave us this one ;(:

It was nice to see the Muv-Luvfags get the dick slapped out of their mouth when a number of them started up on that Pacific Rim hating again; I guess /m/ hasn't gone to total shit just yet.

I truly enjoyed the movie also, by the way.

'Pacific Rim 2'? Director Already Has 'A Couple Of Things' In Mind
    Spoiler: show
"Pacific Rim" is a rarity among this summer's blockbusters in that it's completely original, based solely on the imagination of its creators. But that also means that it has more work to do — especially if it's successful.

If it's a hit, audiences will likely demand a sequel. But given its monsters-versus-robots set-up, a follow-up doesn't sound too difficult to imagine. In fact, the film's co-writer and director Guillermo del Toro already has a few ideas for a follow-up, and when MTV News caught up with him, he detailed what exactly he has in mind

"I'll tell you a couple of things. We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure," del Toro told MTV News, referring to one of the many giant robots that fight monsters. "We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure. Second thing is you're gonna see a merging of Kaiju and Jaeger. And that is quite special."

Following the adventures of human soldiers who pilot giant robots called jaegers to fight against undersea monsters called Kaiju, the film climaxes with an enormous showdown underwater as the last remaining robots fight to close a portal between our world and the one from which the monsters emerge. Del Toro said that if nothing else, this epic showdown produced a few promising ideas about how to further explore this larger-than-life world and push its mythology into new territory.

"Just think about it for a second," del Toro explained. "We sent Gipsy to the other side, right? It exploded, but whatever remains stays there." Referring to "drifting," the psychological process through which jaeger pilots team up with each other to maneuver their giant machines, he highlighted another plot point that might come into play in a sequel.

"We've drifted with a Kaiju brain," he observed ."Well, then start riffing on that and you'll get to something."

Excellent movie, this will be the closest thing ever to Evangelion. I'd give this 8/10

Just got back. Obviously loved it.

    Spoiler: show
Only negatives would be the Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha didn't seem to get enough of the spotlight. They were just "there". Just have the feeling though that the Otachi and Leatherback fight lasted much longer and had to be cut. Beyond that I love how the masters looked. Was a straight up independence day ending.
