so far, not officially from the ouya team, but that doesn't really matter. ouya is running android and there are existing android snes, nes etc. emulators. all it will need is someone to do a small port to correctly map the ouya controller. expect that to already happen in december, when the sdk kits get send out.

2D platformer/shooter/beat-'em-up Mercenary Kings - the latest by Scott Pilgrim vs. The World creator Tribute Games - is coming to Ouya, the developer has announced.

The announcement was made on the Mercenary Kings Kickstarter upon the game reaching its goal of $75,000. The current tally comes to $80,302 with seven days on the clock before its 13th September deadline.

All backers who pledged $15 or more for a Steam copy of the game will get an additional code for the Ouya version. This is presuming the Android-based console ends up supporting download codes, but Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman told Tribute Games that the plan is to do so.

The Ouya version will not be out the same time as the PC version, however, as Tribute needs extra time to port it.

It's been a while since we heard anything about Ouya, the Android-powered open source home game console that became a major Kickstarter success earlier this year. Now, Ouya founder Julie Uhrman says the system is done with the initial design phase and is moving on to final development before mass production.

The first development run of printed circuit boards for the system fit on a small wafer about half the size of a can of coke, as seen above. With these in hand, Uhrman says the team is moving on to the Engineering Verification Testing phase, which involves fine-tuning the software and hardware performance and weeding out any remaining issues before large-scale production can begin. The team has also used the design time to upgrade the underlying OS for Ouya to the latest version of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, though it's unclear how that upgrade will affect the system's customized living room TV interface.

Alpha developer kits are still on target to be delivered in December, but the Ouya team has laid out some basic guidelines for developers to start working on their Ouya games now ahead of that official release. To get an idea of the system's power, developers are advised to test their games on any Android tablet with a TEGRA 3 graphics chip and to plan to output full-screen in at least 720p resolution, without any Android interface elements taking up part of the screen.

Elsewhere in the developers' note, the team mention that Ouya will only be able to run one game or app at a time (so background multitasking is out). The touchpad on the controller will only be able to register a single touch point, unlike most other Android devices. Ouya consoles will also be shipping with a "soft touch" keyboard for text input, in addition to the primary handheld controller.

one touch point is meh but I think its good. For TV based games I do not want a touch pad. It does however hurt already made games as most require a touch screen that allows at least 2; if not way more.

The first Ouya developer kits will begin shipping on December 28, Ouya founder Julie Uhrman has announced.

The dev consoles are an early version of the final console and controller designed for developers to create and test their games. And while all final Ouya systems will be developer consoles, these early systems are “pretty special,” according to Uhrman. “You’ll know what I mean when you open yours,” she said.

Kickstarter backers who chose a developer tier will receive their kits shortly after they’ve shipped. Those who couldn’t afford the Kickstarter tier and want to develop for the system can either 1) wait until Ouya launches in March and buy one for $99, or 2) partake in Ouya’s 10-day dev kit giveaway.

On the software side, the Ouya Development Kit (ODK) software is currently in testing. When the Ouya dev kit ships, developers (even those who have not yet received their console) will be able to access a web portal where they can download the ODK.

Finally, to all Ouya Kickstarter backers, you’ll be able to confirm your online usernames by December 25.

Is there a reason why the game is not running at the native resolution/landscape. I'm not turning my 44" vertical to play vidya.

its his game. He said that it was not optimized for it yet.

Think of it being built like angry birds you can only play it one way, im willing to bet the game will have landscape(or any game that is built for it lol) He built the game for smartphones only it would seem.

edit: he was just showing that it can work even on the dev build that should not run any games.

Concept is interesting, though I kinda question the quality of games.

    Re: OUYA: Android based console

What I plan to do is see how internet games run on it. Most phone's online sucks. Out this can give me a console style feel with steam indie games(and online support ) ill blow money on it.

Look up tega 3 games some look really good. I think look will be fine its up to devs to make games now. The only thing I fear is people porting smartphone apps only and not treating it as its own device.

Ouya will be the only console Double Fine’s Kickstarter-funded adventure game will see release on, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman said during a talk at DICE.

Over 450 games are planned for the system, according to Uhrman. The Cave, Double Fine’s recently released, Sega-published adventure title, and the next game from Words with Friends co-creator Paul Better will also come to Ouya.

Double Fine’s adventure game is also planned for Mac, PC, Linux, Android, and iOS.

    http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/07/ex...le-every-year/
Ouya is expected to iterate every year, taking advantage of annual price drops on components for the $99 Android console.

"As it relates to iterating the console and refreshes, our strategy is very much similar to the mobile strategy. There will be a new Ouya every year," Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman told us at DICE today. "There will be an Ouya 2 and an Ouya 3. We'll take advantage of faster, better processors, take advantage of prices falling. So if we can get more than 8GB of Flash in our box, we will. And in so doing, make sure that all games are backwards compatible."

Regarding the specs of the Ouya 1, she said, "We're launching on the Tegra 3. It's a quad-core A9 chip. Because it's not a mobile device, we don't have to balance power for battery life. So when all four quads are running, it's 1.6GHz. It's gonna be the best Tegra 3 device on the market."

Games will be tied to a user's Ouya account, so even if customers upgrade annually, the plan is for them to own their content from one console to the next. Ouya also announced earlier today a partnership with Double Fine Productions and Words With Friends creator Paul Bettner. The Ouya console will be available in June.

I think perhaps the best part of this idea is that it will allow independent developers to come to light, much like YouTube allowed independent media creators to come out.

I actually think this'll do well.

Yeah. It's the main reason I threw into the kickstarter. Independent game devs really lost a huge way into the industry when Popcap started making a business out of small games. Even more so when EA obtained Popcap.

Pretty much this. I do enjoy how indie developers have been gaining ground and it's nice how Steam and Ouya are supporting them.

Only real complaints I have are how there doesn't seem to be much in terms of quality control for games and my overall hatred for trying to develop for Android. Still going to wait and see how it works out after about a month or two after release.
