Farewell, from all of us at Paragon Studios
This morning we announced that Paragon Studios will be taking to the skies of City of Heroes for the last time.
In a realignment of company focus and publishing support, NCsoft has made the decision to close Paragon Studios. Effective immediately, all development on City of Heroes will cease and we will begin preparations to sunset the world's first, and best, Super Hero MMORPG before the end of the year. As part of this, all recurring subscription billing and Paragon Market purchasing will be discontinued effective immediately. We will have more information regarding a detailed timeline for the cessation of services and what you can expect in game in the coming weeks.
The team here at Paragon deserves special praise for all that we have accomplished over the last 5+ years. These developers are some of the most creative and talented people in the gaming industry. By now, we've all been given this news internally, but to anyone who may be reading this message after the fact; know that your hard work and dedication has not gone unappreciated or unnoticed. To any potential studios looking to grow your team; hire these people. You won't regret it.
To our Community,
Thank you. Thank you for your years of support. You've been with us every step of the way, sharing in our challenges, encouraging us to make City of Heroes better, more than everyone else thought it could be. We couldn't have come this far without you. I implore you all, focus on the good things of CoH and Paragon Studios. Don't dwell on the "how" or the "why", but rather join us in celebrating the legacy of an amazing partnership between the players and the development team.
Thank you, and I'll see you in the skies, one last time.

UE4 Press release:
Epic Games announces the establishment of a new Seattle studio, which will be initially focused on engineering efforts for its award-winning Unreal Engine 4 technology. As of today, Epic is recruiting developers to work on its latest technological projects.
Epic is searching for exceptional programmers and support staff to collaborate with its engineering group, which maintains a median industry experience of 12 years. Epic is especially looking to hire senior-level talent specializing in online game services and the infrastructure to support them.
"The proximity to key partners, the density of world-class talent and all the factors that make Seattle an attractive place to live convinced us that it is the perfect locale for Epic's West Coast operation," said Epic Games President Dr. Michael Capps. "We are looking to hire even more of the best engineers around to contribute to Unreal Engine 4, which we believe is set to change the way we all make games."

Valve Contacted Japanese Developers To Bring Their Games To Steam
Steam has been getting an increasing number of Japanese titles like Recettear from Carpe Fulgur to most recently a port of ClaDun x2 from NIS America. Marvelous AQL will join the Steam train with Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax Ultimate Boy, which is slated for release on September 27.
"As I understand it, Valve got in touch with us! They’re keen on giving their users great options on their service and they contacted several Japanese publishers," Marvelous AQL producer Esteban Jose Salazar said to Siliconera. "I was actually hired on after MAQL had decided which game to publish. My first day they told me we’d be doing Half-Minute Hero on Steam and my grin was about a foot wide. I’m a huge fan of both. Valve has made it so easy for us to bring the game to Steam with their constant support and amazing publishing tools. Running development of a game in two languages (English and Japanese) can cause major headaches, but Valve was always prompt and professional in helping us out."
Xseed has said Half-Minute Hero was one of their lowest selling titles. That was disappointing news to hear since Half-Minute Hero is stellar with a fantastic localization. There’s one particular scene in the Hero 30 storyline players won’t forget. Salazar believes Steam can give Half-Minute Hero a wider audience. "[Steam] gives us instant visibility without having to worry about an ad campaign and shelf space. In addition, we can be flexible on the price. While we might have to charge more for a disc-based version, with digital distribution we can offer the game at a price that users consider fair."
Marvelous AQL has a long list of titles they could bring to Steam like Luminous Arc 3, No More Heroes, and Grand Knights History. I asked Salazar what’s next for Marvelous AQL and Steam? Will we see original games made for PC? Ports of games that didn’t get localized?
"At this point, we are considering our best options. The PC is a killer platform, Steam is a dynamite service, and as long as I’m here I’ll be championing both for our games, old or new. The best things you can do to see more games from us on Steam is pick up this game and let us know you are interested in others. I can’t give you any specific hints, but if the game sells reasonably well, I personally would like to see us doing something *grand* on the PC. I think others would too, but first I have to show my bosses it’s a lucrative platform."
If you have a suggestion for Marvelous AQL’s Steam lineup you can tweet them at @HalfMinuteHero.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com...-environments/Microsoft's R&D division is working on a landmark display technology that will project a full 3D game environment across the walls of player's bedrooms and living areas, a new patent filing shows.
A breakthrough device, known in the patent as an "environmental display", will project 360-degree game worlds across all four walls of a room using advanced projection technology.
Crucially, the device will also boast a 3D depth camera, which it appears can calculate the player's position by emitting infrared light patterns and registering where the player is blocking the signal. This is a similar technique used for Kinect.
But the patent suggests further immersion with the use of Kinect's 3D camera, which can separately calculate the posture and various movements of the player.
It is stated in the patent that the tech will tie into the rumoured Kinect Glasses technology that leaked in June.
Microsoft's shutter 3D glasses are suspected to work with Kinect, with the camera registering where the player is looking by sending signals to the glasses - much in the same way a Wii knows how its remote is positioned using signals sent to the sensor bar.
The possibilities for the combined technologies are unlike anything seen before in interactive entertainment. Players could feasibly fill their rooms with full 360-degree displays, interact with a game world not just on their TV but across the walls around them, and observe 3D holograms within the room through the Kinect Glasses.
The combined devices will, in theory, will provide the most sophisticated tracking data on where the player is standing and looking.
The new patent, unearthed by Patently Apple, quotes the Microsoft document as working on "an immersive display environment is provided to a human user by projecting a peripheral image onto environmental surfaces around the user. The peripheral images serve as an extension to a primary image displayed on a primary display."
Microsoft said that "the user may enjoy an immersive 3-D experience using suitable headgear, such as active shutter glasses configured to operate in synchronization with suitable alternate-frame image sequencing at primary display and environmental display."

Well shit. One good news source down.

Andriasang.com is Closing
I've decided to take up a new non game-related opportunity that I reckon will keep me super ultra busy, so I will be ceasing daily updates.
I may do some database-driven stuff and technology tests (look closely, and you may see the site's backend code base change from PHP to node.js!), but I won't be doing articles or updates. The site's archive and comments will remain in place, so you can still consult old content and share it with your children, and one day their children too.
Thanks for reading all these years, and a special thanks to everyone who registered and posted comments -- even the punk asses I banned.
Resident Evil movie director: Monster Hunter movie planned
Oh goody. http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/11/re...movie-planned/
edit: It didn't dawn on me to check bentertainment till AFTER posting, so derp.Paul W.S. Anderson, director of the first Resident Evil movie and the upcoming Resident Evil Retribution, offered the first hints of a movie based on another Capcom megahit franchise: Monster Hunter.
In an interview with Cinema Today, Anderson was asked what game he'd like to make a movie about next. "Recently, I've been loving Monster Hunter," he said (translated from Japanese by Andriasang). "A film conversion is currently in planning." His brief response leaves many unanswered questions, like whether this is his own plan or an official studio decision, whether Capcom is involved yet, and whether Anderson is actually involved or if this is simply information he has about a movie progressing without him
What we do know is that if he is involved, Milla Jovovich will be hunting monsters.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...ght-from-valveHalf-Life fan remake Black Mesa is among the first ten games to be accepted by Valve on its new community rating portal, Steam Greenlight.
Undead sandbox survival title Project Zomboid and point-and-click puzzler McPixel were also accepted.
Also on the list: horrifying Half-Life mod Cry of Fear, beautiful exploration game Dream, free-to-play online shooter Heroes & Generals, feudal RPG Kenshi, Half-Life 2 zombie mod No More Room in Hell, sci-fi survival horror Routine and city-building RPG mash-up Towns.
"The Steam community rallied around these titles and made them the clear choice for the first set of titles to launch out of Greenlight," Valve business developer Anna Sweet explained via the company's blog. "Since launch, hundreds of titles have been submitted, with more coming in every day. We expect to be announcing more titles coming to Steam via Greenlight soon."
Valve's first crop of successful Greenlight games marks an important next step for the service, following a somewhat bumpy launch.
An initial lack of verification controls led to the service being flooded by fake games and copyright-infringing submissions and other nonsense. Valve was forced to ban Steam users creating the false game entries and begin charging a $100 entry fee to the service, a sum it will donate to the Child's Play charity.
Successful Steam Greenlight games will begin appearing on the service shortly.
"Valve has been in touch to say that, through the power of community voting, we've been allowed a place on Steam!" read a statement on Project Zomboid's Greenlight page. "It's a massive day for us, and we'd like to take the opportunity to thank each and every person who clicked the Greenlight page on our behalf. It really does mean the world to us.
"It won't be an overnight process getting PZ onto Steam, far from it, but thanks to our community and the good people of Steam we've vaulted over one of the most challenging hurdles."
