Terribly sad indeed. The amount of bad attention it is going to bring on good journalists is sad. The damage it will do in general is sad.

I found these points to line up exactly with what I thought when I read that her section, and Dave Cook's, had been edited out.

What will happen now is all manner of places will host the original version of the article, it will be far more widely circulated and discussed, and the reputations of those who have tried to silence criticism could be far more damaged than if they had just ignored it, let alone acknowledged they could do better.

I’m disappointed that Eurogamer edited the article, as I’m quite sure there was nothing defamatory about it – commenting on a person’s public statements is absolutely allowable, even if that comment suggests someone’s public statements put them in a bad light.
    Sad in its childishness.

EDIT: And now I am hearing that there WAS no threat of libel action? That they EG was asked to remove "cruel content" about a fellow journalist and they did. I ... what?

In a “who really cares about Xbox gamers anyway” sort of move, Konami announced today a game-fixing patch for PlayStation 3 players of the Silent Hill HD Collection, which graciously fixes issues with frame rate and audio-synching — but Konami also announced that the identical patch for the Xbox version has been outright canned.

    In the publisher’s own words:

Konami apologizes to any players who are continuing to experience these issues on the Xbox 360.
In other words, Konami is extremely sorry that the product you, the Xbox owner, purchased from them is broken and experiencing issues. However, due to “technical issues and resources,” they won’t be able to get around to it… at all. If they’re looking for suggestions to make good on the transaction made with Xbox 360 version owners, I’d suggest something we in the normal world call a refund. Come to think of it, that might actually be cheaper than a patch on Xbox Live.

So, as it stands, the only thing scary about the Silent Hill HD Collection on the Xbox 360 is the fact that it’s broken and you spent $30 on it.

I already have shitty internet, going to be bad enough as is with all these large, layered images to load vs. the old grid box thumbnails.

Gadzetomania.pl’s Piotr Gnyp recently interviewed CD Projekt RED president Adam Kicinski, who shared new details on the studio’s recently titled Cyberpunk 2077, as well as new unannounced project. The full interview isn’t live quite yet, but Gnyp posted some of the most interesting excerpts on his Twitter profile.

    • An unannounced dark fantasy title (which Gnyp speculates is The Witcher 3) is currently in the more advanced stages of development, compared to Cyberpunk 2077.
    • Cyberpunk 2077 is the first game in a series. Both Cyberpunk 2077 and the unannounced dark fantasy title are bigger than The Witcher, and are multiplatform.
    • There will be no Witcher for PlayStation 3 this year. CD Projekt RED wants The Witcher on Sony platforms, but not this generation.
    • Both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 will be next-generation games. (This might just be speculation on the interviewer’s part.)
    • 2013 will be about smaller topics for CD Projekt RED. Don’t expect major releases along the lines of The Witcher.
    • Regarding The Witcher on iPhone, it’s too early to talk about it, but it’s not impossible.

Zynga has announced that it will be partnering with the oddly named bwin.party, an online gaming operator, to launch a gambling initiative where people can win (but probably mostly lose) real money.

The gambling initiative will begin next year with a slot machine based on Zynga's popular FarmVille license. This announcement comes shortly after Zynga laid off a large portion of its staff earlier this week.

In a shocking turn of events, Square Enix has announced that Lauren Wainwright, a supposed video game journalist, is fictional and that her love of everything Square Enix was just a marketing ploy.

Recently, Eurogamer posted an article that condemned sponsorship in video game journalism and had briefly mentioned Wainwright. The article was eventually edited to remove her mention in the article. It sparked a firestorm that caused many to look for more information about Wainwright. A notable detail that was discovered is that she was once employed by Square Enix and has written extremely positive reviews about their games.

Today, a Square Enix representative has publicly admitted that Wainwright is not real and was created to promote Square Enix games. Robert Peeler, Square Enix community manager, responded to a series of posts on its forums asking about the employment of Wainwright.

I don’t think I have permission to post this, but I will do so anyway. Lauren is not a real person and is actually a character created by Square Enix’s marketing department. I deeply apologize for anyone who was swayed by her commentary or reviews.
Many were in disbelief by this revelation, but Peeler continued to explain, “In the Eurogamer article, they mention she tweeted the following: ‘Urm… Trion were giving away PS3s to journalists at the GMAs. Not sure why that’s a bad thing?’. This was marketing’s way of convincing people that this was not bribery, but just something innocuous. In the marketing circles of many video game companies, they watch each other’s backs.”

“Her love of everything Tomb Raider, as evidenced by her Twitter account, was the real reason she was created,” Peeler explains, “Square Enix knew that Tomb Raider was dead and had to find a way to promote hype for the series again. Her love of Tomb Raider is not genuine and the actress who played her was coached on what to do say when going out to conventions and other public events.”

At this point, the thread was deleted by Square Enix and they have not officially commented on the situation. Robert Florence, the author behind the original Eurogamer article, has said on Twitter, “I knew it! Fuck Square. They haven’t made a good game since they merged.”

Satire post isn't that funny... this topic though is still on fire over at GAF. Been hard to read about anything else. Kotaku's Totilo and Schreier have particluarly upped my interest further with their posts and discussions. All pretty interesting to me, though I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone.

Yeah I've been trying to keep up with the GAF thread as much as possible. I think it's a damn shame that people aren't pushing this topic more. Every time I read the responses to reviews posted here that usually fall in line with, "don't listen to game reviews; use YouTube and peer reviews instead" and it speaks volumes of how important this really is. People don't respect journalist in the gaming industry and by-in-large for a good reason. I wish more people were using this as a means to speak out to sites about how important journalistic integrity is to them and what we would like to see different. Would it change anything? I don't know, but I'm seeing apathy and, unfortunately, vitriol at websites instead since people are using this an opportunity to spew it. It's really disheartening.

its getting harder to respect the gaming journalist industries these days tho in a way even the most hardcore Action adventure columnist can still give bad reviews to amazing games and of course the other way around i'm sure a few years ago someone known at ING gave a game a 9.5/10 the game was a flop and was brandished almost and insult to post such a review, luckily 6Souls is the man with the internet plan i'm pretty sure over the last 2 years 60% of the games i've brought have been down to the reviews he has found, not all of the games have i enjoyed but some i've found to be better then the reviewer rated them, potato's patotos not everything suits everyone

No it's not. Something that's already impossible can't get more impossible.

Personally, I have long since had my own go to group that I trust. My little band of reviewers, critics, bloggers, videographers, youtubers and yes... even journalists that I have found to consistently be in line with my own tastes. Occasionally we don't sync up with what we think is good, but it is extremely rare that we don't. It took time, it took trust, but as times have grown increasingly harder on the wallet it absolutely helps me save money, save time, and enjoy games and gaming.

As of yet I feel that I can count these people and their impressions as trustworthy, and them as having integrity. Should that ever change though, as Mr. Patrick Klepek said in his Worth Reading last week, I will "find someone that you do trust, and listen to them instead."

I find this whole thing so interesting to watch unfold. I don't think this is a huge conspiracy being unveiled, but a serious concern that Rab thought we ALL should be aware of, and that parties close to it maybe could benefit by being a bitmore introspective. I agree. I hope to see that done. I am also pretty disgusted by Lauren Wainwright's actions immediately after this all "blew up."

For a good response from the Editor of Eurogamer who made the decision to edit out parts of Rab's article and his thoughts on this all... check out his article from today.

In the meantime, if you wanna know about those goddamn Skylanders. Jeff Gerstmann is still your go to guy.
