Jim speaks the truth in this

    http://www.escapistmagazine.com/vide...es-of-Business

A new business model comes along, designed to attract gamers with interesting ideas and consumer-friendly pricing.
The old businesses latch onto it. The old businesses pervert it to suit their own miserable ends.
Free-to-play? Mobile gaming? DLC? All good ideas, at one time, now linked forever to some of the most consumer-detesting bullshit in the industry. This is what happens when the old guard see a fresh new body, and set about cracking its bones to form a twisted and terrible shape.

    Possible PS Home Rename Coming

    Friday is Game Day 2013

    Junction Point to Close
It was with much sadness that we informed our teams today of changes to our Games organization, which include the closure of Junction Point Studios. These changes are part of our ongoing effort to address the fast-evolving gaming platforms and marketplace and to align resources against our key priorities. We’re extremely grateful to Warren Spector and the Junction Point team for their creative contributions to Disney with Disney Epic Mickey and Disney Epic Mickey 2.
China's ban on games consoles may be lifted, suggests Culture Ministry source
Chinese authorities are reviewing a decade-long ban on game consoles and considering the possibility of opening up the country's video game hardware market, a government source told China Daily.

Because of fears of the potential harm to the physical and mental development of the young, seven Chinese ministries collectively banned the manufacture, sale and import of game consoles in China in 2000.

Major game console vendors across the world, including Microsoft Corp, Nintendo Co and Sony Corp, made several attempts but failed to find a way to enter the Chinese mainland market officially.

"We are reviewing the policy and have conducted some surveys and held discussions with other ministries on the possibility of opening up the game console market," a source from the Ministry of Culture, who asked not to be named, said.

"However, since the ban was issued by seven ministries more than a decade ago, we will need approval from all parties to lift it," the source said.

Grasshopper Manufacture to join GungHo Group
On February 1, Grasshopper Manufacture, the developer behind No More Heroes, Lollipop Chainsaw, and the upcoming Killer is Dead, will join GungHo Group, both companies have announced.

GungHo is fusing the planning and development power of Grasshopper Manufacture with the power of managing online games cultivated by both companies to produce higher quality content.

4Gamer published an interview with GungHo CEO Kazuki Morishita and Grasshopper CEO Goichi Suda discussing the union.

Last night, GungH Online Entertainment announced it acquired Goichi Suda-led development studio Grasshopper Manufacture. Today, GungHo Online Entertainment America has commented on the acquisition in an English press release.

“We believe the strength of a publisher lies in its creative talent so with the addition of Grasshopper Manufacture and Suda 51 we are adding some of the most innovative talent in today’s gaming world to our stellar family of independently-operated studios,” said Kazuki Morishita, President and CEO of GungHo Online Entertainment. “Suda 51 projects are known to put a unique spin on every game so coupled with our proven ability to support development with AAA resources including a tailored online experience, we believe gamers will benefit from this collaboration.”

Grasshopper is GungHo’s fourth “prominent studio,” joining Ragnarork Online developer Gravity, Lunar and Grandia creator Game Arts, and Tenchu and Way of the Samurai developer Acquire.

“By joining GungHo Online Entertainment, we are aligning ourselves with a strong, established publishing force that will support our vision to further create inspired new games that appeal players across the world,” said Grasshopper Founder and Managing Director, Goichi Suda. “The Grasshopper team and I have many new ideas to share with our fans as we move forward so this union with GOE will help us realize our future plans.”

GungHo teases it will have more details on upcoming Grasshopper projects in “the coming months.” We should likely hear about Killer is Dead‘s western localization by then, which is rumored to be published by XSEED Games, who have worked with GungHo Online in the past on the western edition of Ragnarok Odyssey.

A roster of hand-selected new Japanese-developed titles coming to fans across multiple platforms, including PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita and Windows PC

Torrance, Calif., (January 31, 2013) – XSEED Games, an independent-minded publisher, is celebrating the new year by announcing a robust lineup of action and RPG titles scheduled for North American release in 2013. Among the titles XSEED Games has revealed it will be publishing is the upcoming action thriller, KILLER IS DEAD™. Developed jointly by KADOKAWA GAMES and esteemed game creator, Goichi Suda (aka SUDA51), and his GRASSHOPPER MANUFACTURE studio, KILLER IS DEAD will be available for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Other titles confirmed for release in 2013 include a host of handheld titles, such as the RPG adventure title Rune Factory 4 for the Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system, as well as Ys: Memories of Celceta and Valhalla Knights 3 for the PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system. The company will also be releasing Ys I&II Chronicles+ on Windows® PC via Steam.

“XSEED is ringing in the New Year by sharing a glimpse of our upcoming lineup of great titles for 2013, including the exciting partnership for KILLER IS DEAD, the newest creation from KADOKAWA GAMES and SUDA51, which I personally selected to bring to the US market,” said Shinichi Suzuki, President and CEO of XSEED Games. “In the coming year, we will release an array of solid action and role-playing games that are sure to delight fans through a combination of high quality gameplay and well-crafted localization.”

The full lineup of XSEED Games titles includes:

    KILLER IS DEAD

PS3™/Xbox 360®, Summer 2013 – Created by game legend SUDA51, this highly anticipated original game is set in a not-so-distant future similar to (but not the same as) the world we know now. The player takes control of an executioner named Mondo Zappa who wields a Japanese sword in his right hand and brandishes interchangeable weapons in his left artificial arm. His ultimate goal is to execute various heinous criminals scattered around the world and beyond.

Completely unique visuals and outstanding stylish action come together to deliver an unprecedented gaming experience in KILLER IS DEAD. This brand-new action title is being jointly developed by KADOKAWA GAMES and GRASSHOPPER MANUFACTURE, with SUDA51 lending his trademark sense of style at the helm. Deep Silver, the games label of Koch Media, will bring the title to the countries of Europe and Oceania.

    Rune Factory 4

Nintendo 3DS, Summer 2013 – The first game in the Rune Factory simulation/role-playing series to be released on the Nintendo 3DS, Rune Factory 4 adds new romance options, the ability to select a male or female character at the game’s start, and has endless crafting, farming and cooking opportunities. The player becomes Selphia’s prince or princess and can manage the village, explore the countryside with townsfolk, or tame monsters in the wild to aid them in battle or help out in the fields.

    Valhalla Knights 3

PS Vita, Fall 2013 – The fourth title published by XSEED Games in the popular Valhalla Knights action RPG series, Valhalla Knights 3 features a robust character creation system and brings intense seven-on-seven party-based combat to the PS Vita. Players can select from one of seven races and one of twenty job classes such as Fighter, Mage, Thief, Priest, Akatoki or Archer, while also equipping two sub-jobs. Players can adventure with a party of their own making or brave the wilds alone and seamlessly engage in real-time combat to earn skill points for upgrading and unlocking abilities unique to each job class.

    Ys: Memories of Celceta

PS Vita, Fall 2013 – An extensive reimagining of (and pseudo-sequel to) Ys IV, one of the only Ys games never before released in the west, this title puts more enemies on screen than ever before and features the largest, most non-linear overworld in Ys history, boasting superlative graphics and a triumphant evolution of the fast-paced gameplay that has made this series a timeless action RPG mainstay. As the game opens, long-time protagonist Adol Christin finds himself alone, dazed and confused in a strange land, and must piece together his memories of how he got here and why, all the while struggling to determine whom he can trust.

    Ys I & II Chronicles+

Windows PC (Steam), February – XSEED Games has delighted RPG fans for years by publishing multiple Ys titles from legendary RPG developer Nihon Falcom for handheld platforms and Windows PC, and now Ys fans can celebrate once more as an enhanced remake of the classic first two games in the Ys franchise comes to Steam for the first time. Including both Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen and Ancient Ys Vanished: The Final Chapter, this action RPG tells of red-haired swordsman Adol Christin’s inaugural adventure to defeat the evil forces blighting the isle of Esteria and uncover the mysteries of the eponymous lost land of Ys.

“This will be an amazing year for us,” said Ken Berry, Executive Vice President of XSEED Games. “Our portfolio continues to expand and it’s evident by this stellar lineup of titles, so we’re excited to share more details and hear what our fans are most looking forward to playing in the coming year.”

Additionally, XSEED Games recently announced that the company will be publishing the highly anticipated action RPG title, Pandora’s Tower, on Wii™ this spring. More information on each of the upcoming products will be announced in the coming weeks and months. For more information on XSEED Games products, visit www.xseedgames.com. Development sources with working knowledge of both next generation consoles have told us that PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the next Xbox, will ship with a redesigned controller and launch by the end of the year in Japan and the US. PlayStation 4’s European launch will follow in early 2014.

Sony is set to reveal its next PlayStation on Wednesday February 20th at an event dubbed ‘see the future’. Sony Computer Entertainment released a teaser video last night to announce the event. Below, our sources revealed what to expect from PlayStation 4.

    The controller

Sources close to the hardware have revealed to us that PS4 will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. The tech is based on Vita’s rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

    The launch

We’re told that PlayStation 4 will launch in Japan and the US by Christmas, with a Euro rollout following in early 2014, the delay attributed to the complexities involved in European distribution. Alongside the console, Sony will also introduce a new, improved iteration of its PlayStation Eye peripheral, which remains compatible with the PlayStation Move controller. Move will be available at launch, but it’s not clear yet whether it will be bundled with the hardware.

    The specification

Sony has already earned an enormous amount of goodwill among studios working with PS4 development hardware. Privately, Sony representatives have conceded that the company made a mistake in creating such esoteric architecture for PS3, and its strategy for PS4 gives developers more opportunities this time around, notably because the hardware is much more PC-like in its makeup than PS3.

We have confirmed with sources that recently leaked tech specs are accurate. Though Durango devkits offer 8GB of DDR3 RAM, compared to Orbis’s 4GB, Sony’s GDDR5 solution is capable of moving data at 176 gigabytes per second, which should eliminate the sort of bottlenecks that hampered PS3 game performance. Importantly, we’ve learned that Sony has told developers that it is pushing for the final PS4 RAM to match up to Microsoft’s 8GB.

Both platforms are driven by eight-core AMD CPUs clocked at 1.6GHz, with Microsoft opting for a D3D11.x GPU from an unknown source and Sony utilising a more capable solution in AMD’s ‘R10XX’ architecture, alongside the so-called ‘Liverpool’ system-on-chip.

It’s clear Sony has designed a system that, on paper, outperforms Microsoft’s next Xbox. One source familiar with both platforms tells us that in real terms Sony’s console is “slightly more powerful” and “very simple to work with”.

Ultimately, the performance differences between the two consoles will have as much bearing on multiplatform releases as the differences between PS3 and 360 – very little – but Sony will be expecting big-budget firstparty releases such as the PS4 Uncharted sequel to demonstrate its console’s superiority.

CD Projekt RED’s new state-of-the-art REDengine 3 brings a new level of realism to the gaming experience
The REDengine 3 is the third iteration of CD Projekt RED’s in-house technology. It is created for RPGs set in vast open-worlds with improved tools for spanning truly nonlinear stories that are based on real player choices and consequences.

“If we look at RPGs nowadays we find two approaches, one which emphasizes the story but limits the game world and one that builds a vast open-world but hampers and simplifies the story. With the REDengine 3 we combine the positive aspects of both approaches for the first time, creating an open environment with a complex, multi-thread story. Together with believable characters, a captivating tale and a world where players can roam freely without loading times, we will be able to move gaming to a new level with a realistic feel and full player immersion. When working on our previous titles, I didn’t dream that we would achieve something like this. Thanks to the support of all our fans, now we have the possibility to use REDengine 3 and create something many RPG fans dream of.” - said Adam Badowski, head of CD Projekt RED studio.

The REDengine demonstrated its capability to create great adventures for the first time in The Witcher 2 for PC. It was praised for its graphical excellence and exceptional, branching storytelling. The studio developed the technology and with optimization, REDengine 2 brought The Witcher 2 to Xbox 360. Now CD Projekt RED aims to set their games in diversified, open-world ecosystems while maintaining a well paced and robust story.

The REDengine 3 tech is tailor-made to create nonlinear and story-driven RPGs with a system that allows to stream and handle fully explorable open-worlds. Cyberpunk 2077, the second project the studio is working on, will have prime examples demonstrating that REDengine 3 is the perfect tool for creating immense universes filled with exciting, nonlinear adventures. The advanced technology of the REDengine 3 makes RPGs comparable to top-shelf shooters, both in terms of game world presentation and the epic proportions of events that the player is drawn into. The engine is a next-gen ready solution that begins to blur the line between pre-rendered CGI movies and real time rendered graphics, bringing us closer to the most life-like world ever created in video games. All the state-of-the-art visuals form a living ecosystem allowing the player to be a part of a vivid environment. The new face and body animation systems implemented in REDengine 3 offer realistic expression of emotions, movie quality scenes and character interactions.

The technology uses high dynamic range rendering with 64-bit precision that ensures superior picture quality with more realistic and precise lighting without losses derived from reduced contrast ratio. A flexible renderer prepared for deferred or forward+ rendering pipelines has a wide array of cinematic post-processing effects, including bokeh depth-of-field, color grading and flares from many lights. A high performance terrain system allows multiple material layers to be efficiently blended and uses tessellation for the best possible detail. The technology also includes seamless blending between animations and physics along with many more features. The engine uses CD Projekt RED’s new version of its proprietary REDkit editor with tools made specifically for RPG game creation. The editor can build complex, branching quests and set them in a free roaming environment with a simplicity not achieved by similar toolsets.

EA 'taking Medal of Honor out of rotation' after poor Warfighter reception
Electronic Arts is taking the Medal of Honor franchise out of its lineup due to low scores for Medal of Honor Warfighter, chief operating officer Peter Moore said in an investor call today.

"We struggled with two challenges: the slowdown that impacted the entire sector and poor critical and commercial reception for Medal of Honor Warfighter," said Moore. "Medal of Honor was an obvious miss. The game was solid, but the focus on combat authenticity did not resonate with consumers.

"Critics were polarized and gave the game scores which were, frankly, lower than it deserved," he added.

Warfighter, the latest installment of EA's Medal of Honor military shooter franchise, was released in October 2012 and received mostly negative reviews.

"This one is behind us now. We are taking Medal of Honor out of the rotation, and have a plan to bring year-over-year continuity to our shooter offerings," he said.

No new xbox for me then.

    http://www.edge-online.com/news/the-...w-kinect/#null

The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray discs and new Kinect
Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function, ruling out a second-hand game market for the platform. A new iteration of Xbox Live will be an integral part of Microsoft’s next console, while improved Kinect hardware will also ship alongside the unit.

Sources with first-hand experience of Microsoft’s next generation console have told us that although the next Xbox will be absolutely committed to online functionality, games will still be made available to purchase in physical form. Next Xbox games will be manufactured on 50GB-capacity Blu-ray discs, Microsoft having conceded defeat to Sony following its ill-fated backing of the HD-DVD format. It is believed that games purchased on disc will ship with activation codes, and will have no value beyond the initial user.

Our source has also confirmed that the next Xbox’s recently rumoured specs are entirely accurate. That means an AMD eight-core x64 1.6GHz CPU, a D3D11.x 800MHz graphics solution and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. As of now, the console’s hard drive capacity is said to be undecided, but Microsoft’s extended commitment to online delivery suggests that it will be the largest unit it has put inside a console to date.

Though the architectures of the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation both resemble that of PCs, several development sources have told us that Sony’s solution is preferable when it comes to leveraging power. Studios working with the next-gen Xbox are currently being forced to work with only approved development libraries, while Sony is encouraging coders to get closer to the metal of its box. Furthermore, the operating system overhead of Microsoft’s next console is more oppressive than Sony’s equivalent, giving the PlayStation-badged unit another advantage.

Unlike Nintendo, Microsoft is continuing to invest heavily in motion-control interfaces, and a new, more reliably responsive Kinect will also ship alongside the next Xbox. Sony’s next-generation console camera system is said to have a similar set of features, and is expected to be discussed at the company’s PlayStation event on February 20.

Curious on what people are hoping the outcome of the next generation is going to be. Is anyone just flat out wanting Xbox to be the more popular system again for one reason or another?

I generally buy both anyways, I just want the the hardware to not be three years obsolete by PC standards at the time of launch.

According to all the rumored specs that have been reported, both systems are already obsolete compared to the Master Race.

I just want the hardware to be enough so we're not stuck with 30fps sub-720p linear corridor FPS because that's the only way you can have 'good' graphics.

    Spoiler: show
Inspired by the weird fiction stories and other tales of macabre of the early 20th century, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a game to be played at night, alone, and in headphones. With The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, The Astronauts – a team comprised of People Can Fly (Bulletstorm, Painkiller) veterans – aim to evolve immersive storytelling in games. It’s set for release on PC via digital distributors in 2013.

As a detective with the supernatural ability to visualize scenes of lethal crimes, you investigate the kidnapping of a young boy, hoping to save him before it’s too late. The investigation leads you to a beautiful mountain area, where you come across a severely mutilated body of one of the kidnappers. Using both your paranormal skill and modern detective tools you discover the mystery behind the trail of corpses in the valley, the roots of an ancient force ruling the area, and the fate of the kidnapped boy.

“What we care about the most is that the players feel like they’re really there. Immersion is our number one priority”, said the game’s designer, Adrian Chmielarz. “It’s a game about exploration and discovery. We’re not abandoning the gameplay – on the contrary: we’re trying to strip it down to the bone and make sure it’s always meaningful and truly makes the experience better.”

The game is being developed on the latest version of the industry-leading Unreal Engine 3 technology from Epic Games, as well as exciting new technology, the details of which we will reveal in the coming months.

J.J. Abrams & Valve to Team Up
It was announced a while back that film director J.J. Abrams and Valve’s co-founder Gabe Newell would be keynoting the opening of D.I.C.E 2013, a summit for game developers and press. Today, during that keynote, the two mentioned their genuine interest in making both a game and, potentially, a feature film surrounding a Valve title.

“There’s an idea we have for a game that we’d like to work with Valve on,” said Abrams. Newell then added, “We’re super excited about that and we also want to talk about making movies, either a Portal movie or a Half-Life movie.”

To get people jonesing with the idea, the dynamic duo ran some clips showcasing each other’s career of work – featuring bits from none other than Half-Life 2 and the first-person-dizzy-fest that was Cloverfield. Each was followed up by a discussion on what works and what doesn’t in each medium, given their experience in their respective fields.

“I love the experience of playing your games,” Abrams told Newell. Newell mentioned a scene from Cloverfield in which a woman explodes, and claimed it was “one of my favorite moments in any of your movies.”

Newell went on to mention that much of this has already been discussed, and that much more could likely take place:

What we are actually doing here, we are recapitulating a series of conversations going on. We reached the point that we decided to do more than talk.

    New Wolfenstein Coming
A post on Polygon today gathers evidence and makes a bold pronouncement: id Software and Bethesda Softworks have a new Wolfenstein game in the pipeline. Apparently, game music composer Julian Beeston lists work on an in-development Wolfenstein game with Machinegames, a studio acquired by Bethesda-owned id Software a couple years ago.

Add to that the blips about work being done on a Wolfenstein movie from November, not to mention Bethesda-parent company ZeniMax registering “wolfenstein.com” in 2012, and you’ve got some pretty decent evidence starting to pile up.

Netflix is pretty great, right? Unlimited streaming of many, many movies (some of which are actually good) not to mention all the binge-watching of your favorite television shows…what’s not to love? The downside, of course, comes when there’s a movie you want to watch that isn’t on Netflix Instant. Adding DVDs basically doubles the cost of the service. Blech!

Today, though, Microsoft’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb announced on his blog that the Xbox 360 would play host to a brand new video-streaming app: Redbox Instant. For $8 a month, you’ll have streaming access for whatever they’ve got on their servers, plus four one-night DVD rentals from Redbox kiosks. If you live close to one, that’s a pretty solid deal…so long as what they’ve got to offer through streaming is actually worth checking out.

Sure, Netflix is superior in the lack of late-fees and never, ever having to leave your house. But! You’ll never get a new DVD on a Sunday (thanks, US Postal Service) and the streaming/DVD option is pricier than this new jammy. The app doesn’t have a release date quite yet, but you can sign up for the closed beta right here. I did. And I got in!*

I’ll be spending a month trying it out. You people do the same, and we’ll compare notes in March.

*The beta is for the service itself–not the app on Xbox 360. I found this out after the fact. I am mad now. I feel dumb.

    No Notch for Psychonauts 2
After spending a weekend answering questions on Reddit, Mojang founder and Minecraft creator, Markus “Notch” Persson revealed that he has formally pulled out of the potential funding discussions for Psychonauts 2 that he was so enthusiastically a part of months ago.

When prompted by Reddit user throwaway781227 about his plans to fund the development of a Psychonauts sequel from Double Fine and Tim Schaefer, Notch responded that his estimates for overall costs were off a bit:

I somewhat naively thought “a couple of million” was two million. I had no doubt in my mind that a Psychonauts 2 would earn that money back easily.

Turns out they wanted 18 million dollars, haha. I don’t have the time at the moment to even try to get educated enough to make an eighteen million dollar deal. Perhaps in some distant future when I’m no longer trying to make games, I could get into angel investing.

I’ve made one private investment into a game so far, at 100k, and it’s frankly a lot more work than I thought.

    Ubisoft's Osiris is now Nosiris
Last week, we posted about footage of Osiris, a project that seemed to be in-development from the Ubisoft Montreal team. There were rumors that it might’ve been a Prince of Persia reboot, or something entirely new…but above all, it seemed kind of neat and intriguing.

Well, according to a post on Polygon, the game isn’t really anything at all…at least, not anymore:

The content in question was from a Ubisoft project that is no longer moving forward.
Dang. Osiris is nothing more than a dead project. Too bad—it looked pretty cool, and goodness knows we can always use more new IPs rather than reboots, sequels, and prequels.

    Ziff Davis Acquires IGN
Ziff Davis, the digital publishing company behind PCMag, AppScout and LogicBuy, has purchased IGN Entertainment from its previous owner News Corporation for an unspecified amount of dough. J2 Global, parent company of Ziff Davis, announced the acquisition today.

IGN, along with its sibling sites – GameSpy, AskMen, File Planet and 1Up – will officially fall under the umbrella of the Ziff Davis brand, which includes aforementioned sites like PCMag.

News Corporation stated that this sale is part of the company’s initiative to separate its entertainment and publishing divisions, plain and simple. How much this sale went down for is still unknown, but GamesIndustry reports that it was less than the $100 million that News Corporation desired.

In 2005, News Corporation scooped up IGN and its siblings for a whopping $650 million, to give you some context.
