ATT Cell Phone questions. help a brother out

so my broad has a fucking awful blackberry torch that freezes and/or stops working every god damn day.her contract is not up for like a year. If we pick up some other ATT device off craigslist is it just a matter of inserting her sim card to the device and being good to go? I have been a VZW customer my entire life so the whole sim card thing is a foreign concept to me.

You'll most likely need to contact AT&T and have them set it up on their side before you transfer the SIM. Also, you'll want to make sure the device you buy has a clean ESN... get the seller to commit to that in writing, or if you end up buying from somewhere like an eBay store, make sure there's a money-back guarantee.

when i had t-mobile, all i needed to do when one of my phones broke was to swap the sim card. i was even able to put it in one of their cheap, prepay phones.

however, when i put the sim card in a sidekick 2 my wife used a while before, i did need to call to have the data plan set up. i would assume AT&T is the same

Typically, yes. Only issues I've had with it are with going from 3G only to a 4G capable phone, as that required an updated SIM card ($20-30 or so at an AT&T retailer) and toggling a data service option on the account side (no cost). If you pop the SIM in and data doesn't work, that's probably the issue, so just take the phone to the store and they should be able to get it straight.
