In a financial bind, need help finding assistance programs.

So if I'm hiring for a job that pays say $40k/year normally and I want at least an associates, but a guy comes in that I, as a manager, believe he can do the job, I wouldn't offer him say $32k/year but I'd instead pay more? I've seen it first hand, this is how things work. If you think otherwise it is from lack of experience in the workforce.

No, what I am saying is, if the job market is as bad as you all describe, the person doing the hiring will be able to get someone with a degree to take the job for $32K. You get a higher quality employee for the same price.

This is assuming the market is as bad as you all describe, because if it is, then these people without jobs won't be turning down jobs.

I get what you're saying, so it's down to semantics I suppose. I haven't personally looked for a job now in a bit as I've been with my current employer for 5 1/2 months. Before then, jobs in south Michigan were slim to none. I'm truly lucky and blessed to have been given the opportunity for my current job. Some friends of the family have been looking for jobs and nothing good has come up.

My wife just finished her cna certificate and passed the state test last month. The same week she put out applications she had 4 interviews and a job. I'm thankful that she chose that field and we were able to get some decent paying jobs.

And I used to hire entry level positions for a not-for-profit several years ago. Mostly warehouse work, truck drivers, lift operators, etc. I'd never take a pool of applicants, find the least qualified, and offer them less than anyone else. That's a good way to destroy a company from the ground up. Even if you think they're somewhat competent, you don't take a lesser qualified individual. The only exception to this rule that I've ran into was retention issues. If you have a high employment turnover and wish to fix it, you don't hire someone with a master's degree to an entry level position, as they're likely to bounce before you know it and you lose the initial investment it costs to hire.

I found the example I gave numerous times while working restaurants, shipping/receiving, etc. In the warehouse/factories I worked at they all only hired temps for the majority of the jobs while having a minimal full time staff.

I know someone who got laid off a $26/hr job and lived between a storage unit and random friends/family's houses on and off for over 6 months because he wouldn't take any job for under $20/hr. Had a lot of $12-15 dollar job offers and just up and refused them. Lived like more of a bum than I am. He just got another job about a week ago paying $27/hr

Yeah, I've collected probably 20k in my lifetime from unemployment - I (at least until very recently) lived my life so that I could survive on unemployment's $1800/mo (in Los Angeles, no less) so that when I was between jobs (every few months) I wouldn't, ya know, die. I think my longest stint on it was 4 months, but I don't have kids to feed either.

I did 6 months after the dot com crash of 02 and then they cut me off. If I worked in the airline/hotel industry though I could have been extended up to 18 months. Go figure. Out here it's typically 80% of your gross, and you have to pay taxes on it. Not much but it's better than zero.

I wish Ohio gave "80% of your gross" like Melena said because if so I'd still actually have some money in the bank, instead of tapping out all my resources just to keep caught up. I'm actually going to have to work 2+ jobs probably for the next couple months until I can find something that is full-time with decent pay.

I am lucky, in that any extra business my mom can't handle with her company, she gives to me to make some money to help cover my bills.

It caps at $450/week in California, and to reach that cap you had to have to "base period" (1/4 of a year) in the previous 4 base periods where you made at least $11,674.01 gross - which is roughly $900/week over 13 weeks - so you can get up to 50% of your gross to a point.

It's great for entertainment, where you can make pretty good money for a while when working (raising your base period), but also have gaps of unemployment for months.

Ohio gives you 50% of the gross of your largest 3-month base period, with a max of $400/week if you have no dependents, up to $539 with 3+ dependents.

Uhh you realize everyone pays into unemployment insurance and it's pay is based on what you get.

That might have been my state disability then when I blew out my shoulder. All I know is my unemployment was pretty close to what I was pulling in at EA doing tech support when I got let go of in 02. Was about 1200 a month.
