Golf will never be cool to the kids. Dem pants.
Has anybody else ever done a double-take on the thread title? I accidentally just read it as "2012 London Special Olympics".
After watching these US Mens Basketball team games, I am starting to agree with the NBA commissioner about sending the younger players to the Olympics and saving the top tier players for the World Championships cause these games are just sad...
Do what soccer does. Under 23 with an option to have 3 players any age.
I feel that the Olympics are and should always be the best athletes at their sport in the world, period. It just seems silly to have the best in some sports and not the best in others. I've heard people say that the Olympics should be non-professionals only, but EVERYONE is a professional now since they're all endorsed. There are NBA players on other countries teams too. Limiting the age probably won't change the dominance too much, look at womens basketball for example cause they're even more favored to win gold than mens (and they're younger). Should Roger Federer, Nadal and Djoker be playing for tennis golds? I think so, and I think basketball should be the same way. The best athletes in the world at their sport, its the olympics. I'd rather the world championships be the one regulated and limited.
Kobe made a great point to argue Mark Cubans anger on the subject. Owners are concerned about possible career ending injuries while playing in the Olympics, but the fact is that these players would be playing every single day on public courts and wherever anyway, against random people that might hold grudges. At least in the Olympics they have top tier medical staff and such. As long as they don't get paid extra, outside of endorsements, they should be able to represent their country. Its just a testament to this countries ability to breed elite basketball players - there are other countries with that ability for other sports and dominate the medal stands just as much if not more in their respective sport.
edit: Personally I'd rather see soccer abandon that age rule too. I'd rather watch a countries team with its elitist players on it, without the spending euro leagues do to acquire players.
Even if they changed soccer to anybody can play, most of the best in the world still wouldn't show up because there isn't enough money involved. I'd imagine there's quite a few sports like that. Boxing for example.
Yeah I remember Kobe saying that and it is true. I just think that when it comes to some of these sports (mainly soccer) the bigger tournaments like the World Cup seem to be more important than the Olympics themselves and that's why they tend to "save/rest" their stars instead of having them compete in the games.
Should just remove Basketball, obviously.
I think they should take football out and replace it with a 5 a side varient like futsal
