We're all living in a wonderful, discrimination free land, where LGBT couples can use their spouse's health insurance, and where trans people aren't being referred to as mentally disabled anymore.

Psychopaths will go after easy targets, and the richest source of easy targets are those who have already been marginalized like gays now, just as it was with any group on the margins throughout history. But it doesn't mean they should get extra punishment for their target selection, as laws against acting on psychotic impulses have it covered. You should have kept yourself up to date on when people were planning to have a parade to showcase what they are.

White parade, black parade, gay parade, jew parade, hetero parade, no homo anal only parade - these can all be avoided by simple planning and moving your vehicle on the proper days to avoid their parade effecting your life negatively for no other reason than to let people know they exist. That's the America is about, hammering and clammering the loudest so everyone believes your minority group is the most persecuted, the most subjugated, the most held back. Anyone who isn't what you are is your enemy and should be lumped into anacronistic groups for easy identification as to what they are (obviously: the enemy) (Also I made that word up, but this is what privileged whitey does) The best strategy is to feign a level of higher intelligence and make baseless claims of ignorance and bigotry for anyone who disagrees with your world view. This is the easiest way to both identify who your enemies are (to yourself) and to identify yourself to everyone else as an ignorant zealot.

Are you implying that perpetrators of violence against LGBT people shouldn't be punished more than perps of crimes against the poor cisnormative heterosexual people so as to not offend the SAWCMs? It isn't about specifying that they're crimes against the LGBT community, but that crimes against the LGBT community/minorities are considered more heinous and therefore result in a greater punishment than crimes against the majority! I haven't read most of this thread, so forgive me if what i say has already been stated.

The problem i have with hate crimes is that they punish people for their thoughts. I agree, that hurting someone because they are gay/transgendered/black/etc is worse than just hurting them, because in addition to hurting them, it's also bigotry, which is bad. The thing is, bigotry should not be a crime. It doesn't matter how horrible of a person you are, we should not be punishing people for their thoughts, or speech.
