Working on a hand made congratulatory card, that's covered.
Need to think of awesome, unique, laugh-out-loud gifts for mommy, daddy and baby.
Visiting them at the end of August, so time is a bit of a factor so nothing too fancy.
Go.

Honestly: Anything that helps the couple out with their child is probably your best bet. A laugh might be cool and all, but honestly, they need all the help they can get and would be very grateful. I.E. Food, diapers, toys, etc.
Now maybe if you get them joke things with that in mind: Funny clothes, cute hats/socks, toys shaped like dildos, etc...
edit: Specifically I meant to say those teething dildo shaped toys. That shit would be hilarious.
Clothes maybe get different age Clothes because they grow out of them, but they also destroy them fast. Teething toys are also good.
Some cool stuff here, assuming they're geeks: http://www.thinkgeek.com/geek-kids/newborn-infant/
Onesies, stuffed animals. Gift certificates.
Do they have a baby registry somewhere? I'd just pick from the list. It's much more practical for them because you'll know they definitely need the items. Otherwise you may have friends or family buying the same gifts for them.
money, 100 bux in a classy card should do
coat hanger
If you've got some extra coin lying around, how about a spa gift cert. for the wife? Trust me, she'll thank you for it, once she can get the free time to drop the loveball off at her mother's at some point.
Stuffed animals! Lots and lots of stuffed animals!
Definitely better to use a registry if they have one, avoid newborn baby clothes as they are likely to get a lot/they may not fit. Easier to buy something too big that they will grow into, although its important to remember seasons change. I also agree that thinkgeek is a great place to shop, so many awesome baby things.
I used to work in a gift shop, there was a book "Baby operation manual" that was very cute, informative and funny. There is also Cloud B that has a bunch of really popular toys like the twilight turtle, lavender lab and sleep sheep; that are supposed to help baby sleep. These used to sell out in no time when i worked there.

Teething toys in the shape of dildos is a pretty fantastic idea. I might steal that myself next time somebody gets preggo.
Diapers or formula would be best. Lord knows I could have used them a lot more than the hundreds of infant clothes I got that were never even used.
Hand puppets. They work as stuffed animals AND you can make them talk. Some of my best memories are being woken up by my dad with Iggy the Iguana and T the T-Rex (I'm not that good at names). He still uses them from time to time for the Children's Message when he does lay-preaching at our church. I'm told the kids love it.
Anyway, you can get all kinds/sizes of puppets. I'd go for medium sized ones, though. You want em to be big enough to snuggle and small enough for a little kid to carry around. I remember seeing some sharks and that sort of thing at the zoo gift shop, and I'm fairly certain my parents got Iggy and T for me at a zoo as well, but I honestly don't remember. I'm sure there are puppet shops, though, and there's always the internet. Maybe you could find a puppet relating to a parents' nickname or something?
holy shit this. anytime I have a friend who is pregnant, I get them this and they love it. Not going to lie, I was hoping I'd get one in return but didn't. ;_; I got a lot of diapers and wipes though and that was huge. If you know that they come from big families btw I'd avoid getting clothes. I got so many that there are some outfits she only got to wear once before outgrowing and one or two she never wore. Things like diapers, wipes, baby shampoo, baby lotion, etc, are great 'cause you know they'll use them.
If you do want to get them something toy-related that's nice I recommend getting one of these:

I don't know too many people who know about these, and they are amazing. Tummy time can be stressful for new parents (at least it was for me) 'cause a lot of babies hate it. This helped a lot as she was entertained during tummy time, and won't cry like instantly. At least it is something they probably won't get from anyone else, and may not know to get one otherwise.
