It should simply be a live event at the very last day. Have NPCs shout something in cities and offer to warp you to the actual area where you'll have to fight off Garleans Campaign style and when it's over servers go offline after another epic cutscene.
While that would be radical, a massive Player vs Garlean battle along side all the main NPCs in the middle of a darkened, red-glowing Mor Dhona with Meteor a just couple hundred feet off the ground. Then your character is logged off of 1.0 for good.
Have it happen every hour or so for the last 2-3 days, have a set amount of characters on each side, balance lack of players with more NPC allies, have NPCs spam raise on any dead people, go out with a boom.
That sounds even better. Have the whole server participate in an epic battle with no waiting around for groups and shit. The Garleans would have to win of course, otherwise it would defeat the whole point of the story leading into v2. They could use it as a blueprint for some large scale public v2 content. Is that what Campaign was? I quit XI long before that.
Garleans don't really need to win, just start a cutscene after a set amount of time (or after a few waves on Garleans, mobs, Magitek machinery and bosses) that resembles the new intro. Characters get warped and everything goes black with a "To be continued..." screen.
Edit: Also I'm quite certain that Dalamud will grow even bigger in the coming weeks. They've added a new weather effect with the patch and it's only used for the new battlefield right now but it could show up in all areas when Dalamud is close enough.
I really hope they play with what they have going on here for the next handful of months and make the whole world look like it's about to get fucked. Despite the underlying reasons for this whole thing, it's not often you get the opportunity to do this kind of shit with an MMO.
I always envisioned this as some giant open world battle taking place outside of the three big cities with the servers going down for "maintenance" in 24 hours or so. Finally when the servers go down you see a cutscene and the world gets destroyed blah blah blah "To be continued..." then everyone gets kicked off till 2.0.
Unfortunately I think that the current server infrastructure is too fail to support dynamic open world stuff like that.
You are correct. Man I'm getting hyped up just reading these posts but we all know the actual experience will be nothing like what we're describing.
Imagine having Dalamud literally covering the entire sky and a massive war is going on? Can barely tell between day/night. They could probably pull it off but will they.
I'm hoping they really do. The new weather effect for Dalamud makes me hope for the best.
They could definitely pull it off with some weather, dark red lighting, a big sprite of Dalamud straight above, replace 90% of mobs with highly aggressive Garlean Soldiers & Magitek Armor, and make every area open to the sky at all (even in town) susceptible to random meteor strikes (with a few sec warning of their touchdown area) that increase in frequency as we get closer to server-down. Shut down some NPC shops and have the NPCs outside fighting~ et cetera. Have all the important NPCs doing the same in Mor Dhona, fucking shit up like XI Campaign mercenaries did.
Sure some AFK and low level people will get their shit pushed in for a few days but THE WORLD IS ENDING.
(ok fine, logging into 2.0 repairs all damaged equipment)
Well they did mention adding Umbral Era related monsters and also changes to zones while we head towards 2.0 so we could have some interesting things showing up soonWe also still need to see the Crystal Tower.
how great it would be to log into an event when 2.0 starts with 20 char + than
First thing I'm going to do is run in a circle and observe myself on another character. Something tells me it will also be the last thing I do, but we'll see.
Heh, I remember that test... Pretty depressing.
Hope this plays during the final week
