I wonder what the max characters displayed will end up being. I hope SE can optimize well and know how having too many characters on screen can also wreck shit aka Nexus events in TERA.

I think we are going to be able to adjust that
there's a lot of stuff that's cancel mode for me, being able to see someone more than 20ft away from me is one of them.
still, I think I rage the most when you lose complete fucking control of your character. Oh, running in an area with people? Let me just have you derp off into nowhere, or freeze for an undetermined amount of time.
Cel ran a test with 2 XIV clients running on 2 different accounts with 2 different characters. He had one character run a circle around the other on one client and on the other client, the circling character was moving through the middle and other weird patterns that was not a circle. Aka poor predictive movement algorithm on the server.
It basically only refreshes other character positions once per second or something similarly slow as hell. Thus a character running in a perfect circle will bounce from refresh point to refresh point in more of a continuous star shape for other people.
Well don't do that test the first week of release, you know servers are gonna suck regardless due to release day fervor...
I do not see how this is ok. Shouldn't the servers be able to handle shit no matter what? Especially on release. I mean server tech has progressed in the last 10 years.
and no this is not an attack on 14 ok? I just think we have become too accepting towards it being ok, that servers should fuck up during launch.
Not ok at launch. Not ok ever. No no nono no no no.
Lag is understandable here and there, but it shouldn't look like that constantly.
Are there other MMO's that don't do this? The video is really neat I sent it to my friend (who is a network engineer) .. and apparently this isn't surprising.
His wallotext:
So they use unreliable transport for position info, and reliable transport for important actions like cure; that makes perfect sense, and is super common in online games, espeically mmos. Very few games use reliable transport for position info because it's significantly slower and has a lot more overhead, and position is updated so frequently that you'll generally get the next update before it gets too far off. Trying to use it over a normal internet connection would generally make games unplayable. I know splinter cell used it for co-op because they needed exact positioning, but I don't know of any other games that actually use a reliable protocol for position info.
Yeah I have been through a ton of MMO launches and no game has EVER succeeded on getting a lag free launch, not even decent launches like Rift were able to escape it. But if it exist beyond the first week or two? Yeah that is unacceptable, especially when this game isn't really launching for the first time.
I don't have a whole lot of other-online-game experience, but I don't recall Diablo 3 looking anywhere near that bad, and I would venture to say that positioning of your partner is even less important there. Heck, I was even playing with someone in Europe and didn't notice weird movement issues ever. Fewer people in the game means they have more bandwidth for positioning updates though, so maybe that's a bad example.
I think most people would be ok with it if the problem with the server was alleviated (as-in, keep a constant tally of average delay between client + server and delay any positioning-based damage by that much so you don't get the whole "I'm 20 feet away from the explosion but the server says I'm dead" Ifrit thing).
Personally, I'd like to see them at least double the frequency of positioning updates.
Granted, Diablo 3 only has to keep track of 3 other characters, tops.
I can understand not prioritizing character position, but they took it to a whole 'nother level. Everyone you watch run around ends up cutting through corners of walls, cliffs, etc. really badly. Following someone is pretty unreliable simply because of this alone.
So the question isn't whether the lag is there, but whether or not it'll get better. The positioning lag has worked both in and out of my favor, so it comes out about even in terms of actual affect on game play (imo). However, it would feel a lot better if it was less noticable, especially considering the get the most use out of WSs, you have to be in the right position relative to the target.
You think in a game where positioning mattered in regards to doing good damage that this wouldn't be an issue... I've seen far too many times where I WS from the side but somehow my hit is still registered from the front. Let's not even get started with Ifrit cracks.
These are things the new client needs to do for me:
- Let me max out and not melt my GPU. My PC is way more powerful than it was when the game game out yet I still can't get remotely close to maxing out. I've yet to see a game (BF3 excluded) that did not allow me to max it out and have a smooth/solid play session.
- It's understandable that positioning won't be updated as frequently as things like cures but it NEEDs to be better than it currently is. Watching people fly through walls and or get killed by shit they're not standing on looks really bad.
- UI needs to be fluid/snappy and allow me to open more than one window at a time. If I sell something to an NPC it needs to be out of my inventory before I can blink... currently this is not the case. To any white knights - no it's not my computer or my connection.
- Use a better method for downloading patches. Opening ports doesn't completely fix the problem with the updater. It's completely hit or miss... shouldn't take 15 minutes to download a 3mb update.
- Graphics, Controller, Font, etc settings NEED to be accessible within the game. If I see an outside configuration utility and not one within the game with the same settings I'm going to be furious. Anyone that has tried to fine tune their graphics settings knows how annoying this is.
I'm almost positive I'm forgetting something... -_-;
Edit: Btw a recent interview leads me to believe that we might be getting international servers to help out with some of the lag. If this is true... I'm so swapping to an NA server. I like my JP friends but fuck that lag.
Q: When will Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 launch?
A: I expect the first Closed Beta for the Japan and International servers to be held end September or early October, entering Closed Beta 2 this winter and Open Beta in January next year. We will be talking to Shanda Games about the China server, with features such as PvP, blocking 3rd party programs and localization, hence the Chian server will launch later.
Everyone is saying that, I think that just means the JP/NA/EU servers vs the lolchina servers.
