Time travel is an awesome mechanic and does nothing other than improving a game.
Been said that, very underwhelming trailer. I want to see gameplay footage, not a CG cutscene that will never appear in the actual game.

well considering they did reuse a number of pics for some of the screenshots we don't know which parts of those zones actually change or not.
but theres a high chance it wont look the same even if it stayed the same.. so I bet they'll change it in due time when they are closer to fully optimizing the new engine.
it does give hope that grand company areas will actually be directly linked and visible in the town instead of being a port-to location. what does worry me about new ul'dah is that if might become less town and more outpost ala what gridania/LL currently look like. They don't look like anyone even stays there, not for now anyway.
and on the contrary... at its worst, graphics was a huge problem for XIV.
not the FMV stuff, obviously, since thats prerendered anyway.
the engine itself has given arise to so many problems that exist fundamentally in XIV. its not that it isn't good, but that it can be "too good" that it requires too much from the players' PCs.
that said, i do agree, they can stop iterating about high quality graphics. That is usually a given from the latest Final Fantasy titles that generally meet expectations already.
hell, even in its lack-of-optimization 1.0 version, i'm pretty sure many people already think its graphic surpass all expectations. it could do so much better tho
edit
1.0 zones will be gone forever. its obviously going to be a one-way trip
Forward-only time travel is fine as it's essentially just stasis. It's probably just their way of explaining how the zones have so much plant growth and whatnot after such destruction.
Yoshida mentioned that showing and demoing an MMO in its playable form is a tricky and usually negative affair for most people. The only way to properly show the MMO has gotten better is to give people a chance to play it for a given amount of time till they can familiarize with the world and how it plays. Most MMO's are really boring to watch while its playing, and cutscenes have the same amount of credence to this games credibility as the FMV trailer gives since even from the beginning FFXIV has had pretty cut-scenes. There is literally nothing they can show us that persuade people one way or another until Alpha that would tell us we are in for a treat (at least as far as trailers go). With that in mind consider this trailer the 'start' of the promotion campaign. It shows events happening in the current world, and almost nothing in the 2.0 world. The key is they need to update it fairly often, like 1-2 times a week from this point forward to keep peoples attention as well as talk about the systems and give video demonstrations of those systems in action, such videos would be nice but not a great way to open your promotional site.
Mentioned it on a couple other forums but I really don't think those pics are of Ul'Dah but instead the surrounding region near it. The Aether Camp looks very similar to the one we have already got a screenshot of and they confirmed that as being near Black Brush in one of the E3 interviews. The other two concept pics I think are actually centuries old Sil'Dih ruins unearthed by Dalamud which is supposed to be a sister city to Ul'Dah that died out due to a zombie plague and was buried by rubble and sand to keep the plague inside the city. If I remember right the city should be either near Nanawa or in the dunes area just east of Ul'dah (this info is from the Mining Class quest story).
Go back to the past(1.23) and try to change things?
Just wanted to point out that the people bitching at the people bitching about the trailer are bitching way more than those actually bitching about the trailer. Carry on.
Don't think we will have to worry lol, after spending 2+ years trying to recreate the world, I don't think they are going to want to stomach more of it. The new banner on the facebook page hints they already got an idea how big they want to make the FFXIV world :D.
Spoiler: show
You can see just how big Eorzea is compared to the rest of the world in what limited view you get. Makes you wonder if they already created a temp render of what they think the world should look like for years to come?
2.0 not even out yet and white knights have already mounted an offensive on the citadel of sanity
I don't think that's fully true. I think that launching a website with comprehensive info more akin to the one for Guild Wars 2, instead of "Adventurers are people who go on Adventures. Would you like to be an Adventurer?" would go a long way.
Ex:
http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/combat/
http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/game-faq/
http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-gam...ents-overview/
I agree that if they keep the momentum going it might become interesting.
I lol'd at shades comment on adventurers. Then sorta got sad because it's a spot on description of how bad SE is about putting things out before they should be.
Someone is going to need to explain to me how demoing an MMO is hard or can be negative.
I mean, if your MMO sucks then sure, it can be negative.
I started playing after watching the Garuda fight and started playing solely because of the Garuda fight. I saw something that looked difficult and became interested. If I had been shown a Garuda cutscene/CGI I would have laughed my fucking ass off and just played BF3 or mdubs.
They could showcase one of their new boss fights, or a reskin of a current one (Like Garuda) and adjust the difficulty so they can beat it with 7. Take video of every characters point of view doing cool shit, have one guy running around on god mode to get a more cinematic view, easy. If they can't do this when we're 1month from alpha then lols.
Atomos existed way before FFXI and he's not related to time travel in those games. And it's not even proper time travel, we're simply sent into some sort of space inbetween (the Rift?) and get out some time after the impact.
Even if they wanted to they can't keep pulling this gimmick all the time or they'd have to change the game then too.
Nothing in a CGI trailer is gonna make your Madden or COD player come play FFXIV though
Create a build and show it at conventions. It worked well for GW2 a couple years before beta started. I duno SE coulda done the same deal in showcasing a small playable section of the game at conventions worldwide this year. It would have been the best marketing tool also. If the game is supposed to be that great and that much of a change then whats the risk in showing it off at an early stage to the public?
Kind of a stupid argument as we all know both gameplay, and cg trailers are known to effectively generate hype. Not tripping over the CGI because I've accepted back at E3 when they rehashed concept art and screenies that they were not ready. If SE was going to go the CGtrailer route to break ground with the public, in my opinion, they really should've gone balls to wall with it by releasing a 5minute cinematic trailer with character voice acting(that doesn't suck), but they didn't. After missing their shot at E3 it's clear they weren't ready. So is anyone really surprised?
edit: Oh yeah, and SE couldn't showcase even a bit of the game because fuck what anyone else says that UI was shopped.
I think its because the game is supposed to change so much about what we already know 14 to be and its supposed to be released this year, yet not one piece of gameplay has been shown. How is that good or acceptable? oh wait lets just trust them.
Got to have faith in what you want to see.
