Just wanted to say that I just finished the book having picked it up after being interested in the trailer, and it's well worth a read. I can't imagine that the movie will be that similar considering how much happens and the structure of the book itself, but I'm really looking forward to seeing it now.

I think the story about Sonmi (the one set in future korea) was my favourite of the six but they were all excellent imo, and vastly different from one another despite sharing common themes.

I can not believe they made this into a movie. The book was good and I did not even know they were doing it. They got a ton of great people to be in it too. I want to see this.

my brother just emailed me from china askin me about "are they spamming trailers on tv for this movie?" and I'm like "cloud atlas, wut?"

I don't watch alot of TV, but they sure as hell haven't been spamming TV spots for it. All I've seen the past week is Prometheus and a few Looper and Man with the Iron Fist spots. The movie sounds epic, could be fail or could be win, but I like the ambition and the book sounds like a good read. I'll have to wait for more reviews to come out, though. I don't go completely off of critics, but when the only really positive review comes from Variety, somethin must be up...

I just got back from this.
It's gorgeous, well executed, and it does have some substance to it, a good film.

    Spoiler: show
Hugo Weaving just can't stay out of drag.

Fuck, I didn't realize this was coming out so soon. (Had heard about it a while back.)

Should I try to read the book real quick or not?

From what I've seen you dont need to read the book first and they are both great in their own ways. I've not read it and loved the movie and want to read the book now it's a fantastic story.

Great book, Great movie. The story is changed in the movie but the point is still intact. The book was far too slow and subtle to be transferred directly to film. One thing that gets old though is all the characters in immense amounts of makeup for them to play other races or sexes, and its some what distracting. Cavendish's story when Nurse Nokes was around was like watching Mrs. Doubtfire.

Should have just used all different actors for each characters (though that may have been a bit more financially difficult. I didnt picture them all looking similar when reading the book. Hell, the point seemed to be that the people were vastly different yet the soul was identical.

This 100%. But I also don't see it ever being plausible financially.

i actually thought the make-up and costume work was well done in making them look as different as possible. overall pretty good, definitely the kind of movie that leaves you unsatisfied and wanting to know more when it's done.

It was a very good movie. Siatdiat is correct the move jumped about more frequently than the book and that was kind of cool. Made it go at a faster pace. Most of the sex swap's were well done and you could look past it being into the movie that much. In Hugo's defence, he is big guy! It is kinda hard to work with that, come on.

A book has a lot more methods of making something like that work but a movie has to convey the same idea and concept in a much shorter time frame and through most visuals, so that's probably why they went the way of making actors play more then 1 character, to show that there is a tie-in among all of them (the soul) w/o having some sort of cheesy way of alerting the audience to that. (like someone picking up a piece of paper that says "all deez ppl haev da same soul")
