I don't understand the people who liked white knight FF9 though.

It's a cool game, I found the interactions between the characters cute and funny, especially the extra scenes one could view pushing select, or start, or something. I disinctively remember laughing at a few of them. It feels classic (this "roots" thing I guess people keep going on about). It was quite hard. But I found nothing that impacts me as much as the other few games did. Also, Necron lol

All in all, I like each and every FF game, but 9 doesn't have much of a special spot in me and is probably at the bottom. Saying that I would love to play it again soon.

I quite liked Squall's character development, how he changes between disk 2-3. The downside in that game was most of the other characters getting little to no development.

You mean Baccano! right? Cause... Durarara has a main character.

FF8 is balls but not as bad as people might think (still pretty bad though)

Star Wars prequels are balls, and just as bad as everyone makes them out to be.

Money, which isn't such an uncommon motivation for war even in the real world.

They were so bad in one way though. Such a ridiculous and constant use of "character thought to have died didn't (OMG!) and comes back to save the day."

Do people not realize that the basic story formula is a basic story formula because it fucking works? I mean, yes, absolutely, you can break from tradition and try something new. Great directors and writers do this all the time, but there are still key elements in those stories that make them work as stories. Think of anything you've seen that was nontraditional. Momento, There Will Be Blood, take your pick really. They all have things in common. Tension, pacing, characterization, mystery, etcetc. Even a movie about a fucking crazy person, "Clean, Shaven", one of the most surreal and disturbing movies I've seen, had these elements.

When you have no main character, no consistent tone, no stakes (and thus no tension), and not even a shred of internal logic (see: running the blockade, medichlorians, wanton genocide), then your movie is fucking garbage. Sorry. Unless you're trying to make some kind of postmodern surrealist thing, it ain't gonna work. It is obvious to anyone who has given even a shred of thought to how storytelling works that Lucas didn't try to do anything new or different, he just tried to make a regular movie and failed in almost every way possible.

Ugh. Completely disagree. I would say literally all of the main eight playable characters in FF9 has more character development than Squall in FF8, and I say that not completely hating 8 either. Squall never really changes all that much unless we count the 'OH MY GOD HE SMILED!' moments. He was always a natural leader, he just stops acting so depressed and childish about it once he finds a woman.

    As for Star Wars... 5 >> 6 >>> 4 >>>>>>>>>>>>> 1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 3

SW1 should be lower, but I really did like the Duel of the Fates fight. ._.

    Amarant? Freya? Quina? Eiko? No.

I will give you 4 of them, and even then Steiner falls on the lower end of that. Zidane, Dagger and Vivi had the most. But the way you say Squall's, you can make any of their character developments sound trivial like that. Dagger got over her mommy issues, etc.

Freya has to get over the pain of essentially having lost her love, and deciding to start all over instead of just letting the crushing despair take over, or just keep ignoring it.
Amarant learns that direct force and sheer power isn't always the best way to go about things. He also kinda learns how to be a team player.
Quina learns there is more to life than just food. S/he discovers the meaning of friendship, and also indirectly helps Vivi come to terms with his childhood problems.
Eiko is my least favorite character, and I might give you that one. She is used to facilitate a significant part of the Steiner character development. I guess she falls more under plot development than character development.

So fine, 7/8ths of the cast in FF9 develops more than Squall does in FF8.

Squall has to get over the pain of losing a loved one that left him scarred at a very young age. He felt abandoned and couldn't trust anyone enough to get close to them again. He has to learn to move on in life. He also has to get over his trust issues and realize that he can't do everything by himself. He overcomes this and learns the value of friendship. This allows him to move on from the abandonment issues of his past. He becomes a team player which allows him to use his already excellent leadership skills. Thats Freya, Amarant and Quina in one.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Squall had amazing character development or anything. Just saying that it's ludicrous to say that the entire FF9 cast had a better one than him because many of them were just as one dimensional or worse.

Fair enough. I generally carry a chip on my shoulder about FF8 because of how good it could have been, versus FF9 that I thought was excellent except for the last 10 minutes. I think I just liked the 9 characters better because of that.

All this argument is pointless though. FF6 whips them both.

Exactly! It's impossible for that game to lack character development for the main character because there isn't one.

Y'all are crazy, Kefka was the main character, and he had development like a mofo.

Well Kefka is technically the only villain I have ever seen not only take over the world and basically become god, but dominate it for years after..

    Pretty hard to top that.

    Star wars = 5,4,6,3,1,2.

FF = 11, 7,8,10,9, rest are equally the same.
