Gustaberg will give me chills until my dying day. Just so much wonder and awe stepping out into the world for the first time ten years ago. The pure, unadulterated joy I experienced (this was my first MMO) as I stepped out in to the field was like nothing I ever experienced. Total geek/dork alert, I know, but the Gustaberg track will always bring that memory back. Probably why I still play; hoping in vain I can one day relive that feeling.

I feel the same with Ronfaure. Like just hearing that zone's song brings back a flood of memories of trying to learn how to play the game since it was my first MMO and figuring out the game and what jobs I wanted to play.

Windy's theme does the same for me. After so many years, could only take so much of the background "doot, doot, doot" before swapping the music files to something less... invasive? I dunno. But Sandy's is definitely an earsore of its own.

haha.. music doesnt usually go in rom folders, but sound ones.
but the stuff i use to sniff out new files doesn't search those folders so i need to manually do it each time.

srsly, SE needs a better marketing team.
That SoA trailer is so bad and what makes it sad is when you compare it to the TOAU and WOTG ones. There was even another bad narrator for a recent FFXIV trailer. Makes you wonder wtf they're thinking.

And yeah gustaberg = awesome even though I'm from Sandy. Camping LL does that to ya.

One of my favourite zone tracks was always:

Remember wandering around Lufaise for hours after finished Promys.

Honestly, my biggest gripe with most FFXI music as it appears in-game is that you can tell its computer generated. While I don't expect Hans Zimmer or Henry Gregson Williams for every piece, listening to something like ToAU's "Delve" and immediately feel like I'm in the 90's listening to a MIDI file isn't a good thing. And the Whitegate theme makes me cringe with that grating whateverthefuck wind instrument it's trying to pretend to be. Maybe it's just my own fault growing up around pianists, violinists, cellists, brass players, and so on.

Should probably try to set it to look for new songs automatically since we have to do their job for them.

And Gustaberg music always makes me sad; it reminds me of all of the people who don't play anymore.

Eh, I'm a classically trained pianist and spent the last ten or so years around musicians, and the computer-generated tracks don't bother me much. To be honest I much prefer the kind of tracks found in XI (distinctive and memorable, albeit with lower sound quality) than those found in games like XII (higher sound quality, but ambient in nature and not particularly memorable).

That said, I do agree that Whitegate's and San D'Oria's themes can be a little painful-sounding.

Whitegate felt like coming home. When I listen to that track, the sheer amount of times I logged in in WG will always make me associate this track with a feeling of "let's do some crazy shit today!"

i really don't think its just the fact that its computer generated. there are ways out there to give computer generated music depth and for it to sound rich. I'm guessing they use only 1 platform for creating FFXI music and rarely cross over to different mediums to get a bigger depth of sound. This is why FFXI music sounds so flat and.. computer generated lol..

but that said, it's already pretty impressive. I still like Naoshi Mizuta for the fact that he's always willing to experiment with different instruments and new sounds. I'd imagine it could be a lot better if more went into processing for FFXI music.. and its not like they don't do it for later FF titles.

I'm assuming they chose to stick this way for the sake of continuity since all the original tracks were done a certain way. it could also be PS2 limitations or something else
(it could the result of Uematsu's direction, he seems to love his fake-sounding synth. i mean, i love the guys music, but his methods are horrible. he was the one who opted against full channel sound quality in FF7. imagine that.)

edit: agree to FFXII. i'm fine with ambient, even if its not that memorable, cos its really great for immersion and all.. but generally XII's OST is very noisy and chaotic. On some tracks theres so much going on that on some days when i listen to it I have to stop because it gives me a headache. its very hard on the ears.

I'd agree a billion times over on the possibility of Uematsu's influence on the midi-style. I guess I'd just prefer the symphonic renditions in-game, since it also seems like people tend to jizz over most of them.
