Ah cool, that must be the new UI for actions on the left.

Also, yay at potentially letting us change UI window colors (like all the classic FFs).
So yeah, definitely getting paragon before beta.
Dat UI. Me gusta.
Also, Yoshi looks like he finally got some sleep.
New live producer letter in the works? I guess it'll be on Sept 25th or whenever same as last year?
Edit: Also yes, the blue UI looks better
Ah good notice on the colors, wasn't sure I like the grey.
It's super small and incredibly hard to make out, but in what looks like the menu to equip abilities on the left, there seems to be 9 things you can select from...
Although, it's probably crafter/gatherer abilities rather than abilities from new jobs, but one can hope, yes?
You would be correct. My thought has always been we'd see at least one, maybe two, more class/job pairing for 2.0. I would only say no to your crafter/gather idea because it doesn't allow you to choose from those classes unless you're on one, but of course what we can do now is completely irrelevant.
Quest-based levelling will almost always be better than grinding, but the former isn't always fantastic. For example I find TERA's quest-based levelling to be incredibly boring. For it to work well you need to be more creative than using the same four or five quest archetypes thousands of times with slight alterations, and the lore behind the quests should be at least somewhat interesting - having the 400th NPC spout a variation on a theme of 'We're having a problem with Fraggletooth Snibblers! Thin out their numbers!' is not my idea of engaging levelling.
Ugh yeah, TERA was terrible. I was bored out of my mind in the beta so much with its quest I didn't even want to try other classes.
I'm wondering how they're going to make a quest system apply to a game with multiple classes per character and where it's expected to do more than one. Would be even wierder to keep solving the same problems over and over than if you were doing it for multiple characters... It's the kind of scenario where a live event system like GW2's would have been perfect, but alas.
Well to be fair, theirs only so many ways to lvl. You can either...
Solo grind the same mob type for hours for a lvl
Solo quest for hours for a lvl (aka kill X amount, gather X amount, activate X amount)
Do instances to lvl
group grind for hours
group quest
wow added battleground lvling
ffxiv added crafting lvling
what else is there...?
Don't think it would be fair to lvl while afk, or chatting with someone for hours >.>
Be pretty much up to the player how they want to play the game.
Yup, it's one of the most interesting issues, but I never saw it asked in an interview before. I guess we just have to wait and see!
Also, interesting tidbit from Kotaku (don't kill me!) article:
Yoshida warned that current players of Final Fantasy XIV may find the system restrictive at first, but that this was necessary to prevent players used to the old system from being thrown straight into the new system without any idea of what's changed.
Also, Gear Sets will be unlocked with quests, something like XI gobbie bag I guess? Dunno if I like that, depends on how fast you can unlock them.
And other interesting stuff from the jp interview:
Y: There are lots of contents to choose from so we have it set where the obtainable EXP isn’t good just by doing one. For those who want to gain EXP efficiently I think it’s best to do different stuff equally.
What are your thoughts on how much party play is required?
Y: For content we have stuff for parties and solo. Also there are public contents which is in between. Basically it’s OK to think that the stuff that shows up in content finder are for parties, others are for solo play. Also when you login or change areas we have it where it shows recommendations of what you should try out.
I read more into the 30 hour tutorial including the starter storyline missions and quests. That, coupled with travel/curiosity I think 30 hours is a good speed if it's enjoyable, AND rewarding.
30 hours might be a tad much, but I really love the idea of having so much guided content for new players. If it's quality, that's practically a full game right there before even starting into the traditional MMO style.
