I don't think the game will see a release before the end of the year, however, they haven't really delineated between pc and ps3 beta/release schedule. I think we're presuming that it will be simultaneous and maybe that's where the confusion begins.

Also, pretty obvious the ACN (tm) and SMN thing isn't gonna work unless they add a significant amount of summonables outside of Primals. Who's with me for starting a petition to bring back Doomtrain?

Edit: Was half kidding about Doomtrain...but maybe it would be possible as a Magitek-related ...thing? >_>

Why wouldn't it work? Bard only has a paltry 3 songs. I don't expect SMN to start out with a terribly large arsenal either.

I only want fencer >> Red mage if they actually take the time to make the fencer actually... you know... fence! It was painful watching rdms swing joytoys like baseball bats, when they should be thrusting. Fencer should have very high evasion as a class and a good amount of parrys and counters as moves, considering how nimble an actual fencer is. It'd be nice to see an evasive mage anyway, if the skills carried over to red mage.

which ls is that? i'm from ragnarok so i'd know who/if they're still active.

endgame has become a lot more casual in XI. nyzul2 and legion are the only ones that are much more setup intensive and require more party/LS organizing. not too sure about new einherjar and limbus. voidwatch can be done purely through shouts and with pick up groups. there are no camped hnms or popped nm systems that are worth/require LS involvement at the current stage in the game.
that said, if you're not started off with Abyssea then it might take you awhile to attain god-status there and then proceed to rule over it and get all you need from it solo/duo/lowman.

back on topic tho. if arcanists use books, then summoners will use books too? hmm guess there won't be a scholar for now

Well the description is pretty clear: Summoners can summon the primals. It's a pet job so I doubt we get the 1 shot> gone route here.
I don't see where the issue is, Yoshida changed his mind already when it came to other things (like jumping mounts) so maybe he listened to those that wanted the classic summons as part of the job?
Honestly I don't want to see Siren or Typhon with the moveset of another summon, it wouldn't make much sense.
Transmuting their essence could simply mean that Summoners can change the nature of the primals from arrogant gods to pets that follow your instructions.

ah ok.. i know quite a number of SF members are still around, but the LS is gone afaik.

    ---

agree about the moveset of another summon, and i doubt they'd do that.
each summon has its own background and 'traditional' set of moves so i bet they'd follow through on that. the wording seems rather flavor-text ish, so i'm not sure to take it literally when it comes to 'transmuting their essence'

It's just lore to explain free companies being able to summon the primal they got the one-time-use item from. (Probably have to give the item to a SMN, hence why they are adding the class/job right away in 2.0.)

They wouldn't have the other primal's moveset just their elemental properties.

Edit: What Mioko just said sounds very possible.

Summoner lore is pretty easy to justify.

You challenge the primal, they laugh at you. You propose a bargain that if you can defeat them, they will lend you their power. You win, get to summon them, done deal.

Hasn't it always been like that? How hard is that?

@Lucavi: I put my name in the hat for Fencer/Red Mage as well. Almost hoping that chain becomes a decent off-tank, amongst other jack-of-all-trades things. Unfortunately it will have to compete with beasts like WAR and possibly DRK in the future. I still don't really see the need for classes to go above level 30 other than to share abilities with all the jobs past that level. You could just as easily implement that another way though, as other games have. I'd rather we level the job past 30 so we're not always capped at 50 when a new job attached to a class we already leveled hits the game.

I still can't see the Primals being part of the SMN's repertoire. They are supposed to be strictly one time summon for Free Companies via the cards. I wouldn't put it past them to actually implement previous summons as fan service, Quezzy, Siren, Moogle, Fat Boco, Bismarck, etc. The Primals, or Celestials if you will, don't necessarily fit the same description, they are far more traditional.

Why would you assume they'd make a Lesser Summon with the same skillset as their Elemental Primal counterpart, that just sounds stupid to theorize.

Making the Summoner job completely useless except for one time every month at best. No, that's not the case.
I'm not sure why you guys are reading so much into it, the job description is pretty straightforward about the whole thing. Yoshida likely changed his mind, it's really that easy and simple. You summon a weaker version of the primals just like in FFXI, where's the problem?

It's not hard, it's just that Yoshida has said he thought it would be silly to see 30 Ifrits in a group if they were supposed to be big, powerful creatures and he didn't want that. That's not to say they haven't flipped on that idea, but the E3 interviews had him wanting primals to be unique in their summoning.

I don't really see a reason to assume he would have flipped on it considering Summoner would have to have been in the works before E3. Assuming they keep the Free Company summoning around, but also add a weaker version of that summon you can have at all times seems to make it needlessly convoluted instead of taking a celestial/terrestrial route to explain away what needs more power to summon (thus be rare) and what doesn't.

Yoshida said that like 1 year ago and he also said that mounts weren't going to jump at all. Battle Regiments were supposed to be similar to skillchains/MBs of FFXI and now we get Limit Breaks instead, things change.

A year ago is different from a month and a half ago, lol.

Just to be clear, I'm not digging in and saying there's no way he changed his mind, but rather a month is a pretty quick turn around on a decision that seemed clear in what he wanted. I'm sure Summoner wasn't conceived on the fly and they decided to throw it all out just in favor of mini primals.

A month and a half ago he was talking about the Free Companies not the Summoner job. Are we really arguing about a description that outright states that Summoner can summon the primals? It doesn't get clearer than that really, you just have to forget about outdated information.
This is Thaumaturge> White Mage all over again.
