To clarify/give sauce to what people have been saying about Primals being 'rare' (ie: like Dark Ixion, and can only summon once every 2 weeks or whatever):
    http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/2012/06...cks-and-rocks/

Again, it's possible things have changed since then, but like TacoTaru said, a year ago is different from a month and a half ago. Read into it as you will.

GE: Ummm… what can you tell us about the new summon system?

Yoshida: [Laughs] As you know there are primals – powerful demigods- in FFXIV. Summons are a staple to any Final Fantasy game, but to me, in recent games the summons have been cheapened because they are so easy to access. The current Ifrit and Garuda battles are hard, but I don’t want a world where everyone has summoned, and is walking around with, their own personal Ifrit. It cheapens how hard it was to get access to that primal. In 2.0 there will only be one of each primal per world. So one Ifrit, maybe one Shiva maybe one Ramuh, per world. These primals will be somewhere in the open world, roaming, and players will need to find them and then get together to defeat the primals. If they win and are the first to defeat it, the primal will come under their (temporary) control. For a 2-week period, the free company or linkshell who defeated the primal will have time to raise up the primals’ “gauge”. If they get it sufficiently raised, they will get to choose when and where to summon the primal for help. It could be used in any battle, and once they use it, the weather in the whole world will change so everyone in the world will know that the group used the primal. Once they summon the primal, it will of course return to the open world.

    Don't shoot the messenger, etc.

Edit: Further clarification: I don't even care either way, since I've never liked SMN in any FF for some reason.

Hm... it -would- explain some of the redesigns for some of the primals in the concept art. Those could be "Summoner" versions of the primals maybe?

You just quoted the interview with the roaming primals and this was confirmed to be a mistranslation. I wouldn't really value this interview that much.

One of the major tenants was to make it feel like a Final Fantasy game. SMN needs access to recognizable summons. Being a high level SMN and then summoning Remora just doesn't feel very FF. I just think there is a better chance we'll see a remodeled Garuda for SMN and the true Garuda for Primal Fight and Free Company, than seeing mediocre tier summons.

Edit: Although that's not to say I wouldn't love to see lots of summons. I'd be perfectly fine with SMN having access to lots of summons. However, if I'd have to choose, I'd take Leviathan over Remora. Hopefully the info leak will speed up a job reveal on Monday updates.

    C'mon, Alkar.

Yoshi straight up said that if they do make a SMN, it won't summon the actual main Primals and instead will have something lesser as pets, like elementals or other element-based avatars. This is obviously because they planned (from quite a long time ago) that the Primals will drop one-time-use summon cards for Free Companies and the entire server will be alerted of their summoning... they were planned to be a lot bigger deal than a single job's... pet.

If this is the case and that Summoners are the only ones who can use these cards... that, in no way, implies the job is useless otherwise.

Around the same time that Arcanist/Summoner got leaked, we were shown the art of a lesser-looking Garuda named Siren.

Summoner without the well known summons will just be silly. Redesigning them for player use would be fine, but not having them at all would just be awful. I -guess- they could be their limit break or whatever, but I'd much rather be able to use them whenever.

ACN is the correct abbreviation for Arcanist, from the dats. I think the whole server is going to be leveling that at launch. Most people because they already have every battle class at 50 and the new players because it's fresh. SE could solve some of that by increasing the level cap I guess.

The whole free company summoning them exclusively and it gets passed around is so stupid imo. I would rather just be able to summon them whenever.

This discussion is reaching OF levels really fast. I find it funny how you're in full denial mode and are grasping at all possible straws here. Siren is her own being, not a lesser-looking Garuda. And before you point out the wings she already had them in the past.
The description states that Summoners summon the primals (with no reference to items at all) and made them obey their commands, classic summoners do just that and Ifrit, Shiva, etc. have always been summonable too. 1+1
Oh and Yoshida also clearly stated that anyone can use that item to call the Primal so that shoots down your theory altogether.

It's not worth getting into an arguement until we have official word on it. I guess by official I mean screenshots of them casting Garuda etc...

...When is the next presentation? Are they all going to be the same? Can we expect new info before the end of the con or is this a "When they feel like it" sort of thing?

You are assuming as much as the rest of us are. They clarified what was mistranslated and it was the part about them roaming in an open world. Why would they clear up one mistranslation but leave some to remain; deliberate deception? That doesn't seem likely. What you are implying flies directly in the face of what he said a month and half ago which only is outdated if you believe they conceived and implemented the idea for Summoner after E3 but before now and backpedaled on the uniqueness; I don't. Maybe they did and maybe you're right; I've been conceding this point the entire time. Practicality, I would venture to bet otherwise though and they've had an idea for Summoners for a long time now. You're hedging all your bets on the word primal when it could be generic term for summons like avatar was in XI to include ones you could and couldn't actually summon.

There's a thread on the OF about it. I commented in it just to throw my hat in the ring even though I doubt it will do any good. I really want that shirt, even enough to buy one.

I'm sorry. It was rude of me to say I was laughing. I just found the pointing out of that line funny. Even if I had said something like that I'd have to laugh and give him credit.
The description is clear but I've interpreted it a different way...

The beast tribes of Eorzea worship and summon forth beings known as primals, among which are Ifrit, Garuda, and Titan. Yet what is a god to one man is a demon to another, for the city-states of Eorzea see these beings as a grave threat to their collective survival.

In times immemorial, there lived mages who had not only the power to summon the primals, but also the means to transmute the primals' essences, thus binding them to their will. Known simply as summoners, the existence of these men and woman and their arcane art have been all but lost to the ages.

It says the beastmen were able to summon the primals that are in question. Plus if we're talking about what mio was saying, that follows the description as well as summoners would have the "power" to summon the primals. Either way there's no wording to confirm or deny either side.

And no other things to back either argument up. But if we want to continue to bicker over these things we can... I just see no point until official word.

I'm not assuming anything. It's all there in the description... they clearly say that these mages summoned the primals and these primals are even named (Ifrit, Garuda, etc.) Exactly what am I making up here?
If my "assumption" as you call it flies in the face of last month's information, your assumption is in direct contrast with this new information we just got.
I don't believe that they've implemented SMN after E3, what I do believe is that there's clearly some wrong information flying around here and it most likely is the interview with mistranslated content and not the official description on the official website.

Edit: @ Mina Yes, it does say that the beastmen summon Ifrit, Garuda, etc and these beings are called primals. Thus when you reuse the same term later on it's normal to assume that you mean the same thing and not entirely different beings. If that's not the case the description is clearly wrong and should be changed because it's obviously not clear enough.
I get what Mioko was trying to say but I think it's silly to describe the whole job with something that can only be used once a month if you're lucky enough. That alone makes me think that the two things aren't related and considering FFXI used the same system I don't see why there are so many doubts.

I'm hoping the level cap gets increased right away. Otherwise you'll have all these current members leveling the new job and bottlenecking. Hopefully we'll get the level cap and a few new jobs. I understand balance and everything, but otherwise with no level cap and only 1-2 new jobs things will be very bleh.
